Systematic Theology: Biblical and Historical

Teeny, Tiny, Itsy, Bitsy FONT
This book was highly recommended. It is massive and must represent many years of hard work by its author. But the tiny , really tiny font may make it difficult for some, to read consistently and enjoyably. It should have been printed in 2 volumes, My rating is for the publication, not the work.

Robert Culver's work is simply one of the most readable theological treatments available. While scholarly, it is still accessable to the neophyte. He does a wonderful job of meticulously presenting his arguments. His erudition and experience are on full display. This is a theologian who has honed his craft for decades. Too often scholars publish their works prematurely (Grudem revised after only a few years, as did Strong years ago.)I have a shelf of fine works: Boyce, Dabney, Erickson, Grudem, Hodge, Oden, Ryrie, Shedd, Strong... Culver is where I advise a serious student to "start." Dr. Culver is eminently fairhanded in his interaction with differing opinions. As other reviewers have stated, he does not cover every subject. However, if you start here and add monographs, you can have a thorough library without breaking the bank. My only real complaint is the small print, it should really be a two volume set. I have owned his volume for over a year now and regularly refer to it and wholeheartedly recommend it.

One of the Best
For 28 years the only book by Dr. Culver I had in my library was "How to get more from your Bible " co-authored by Lloyd Merle Perry. That book is only 233 pages long. A vast difference from 1258 pages of this theology. I have almost another 25 theologies on my book shelves. This volume by Dr. Culver is one of the finest anyone may purchase. I have it on the shelf with R.L Dabney, Louis Berkhof, Dr.Robert Reymond, and Rousas John Rushdoony. You need not agree with any theologian to have their book on your shelf. But having a volume such as this or even the likes of Pannenberg (such as I have) will help you to sharpen and focus what you do believe. I greatly enjoy Dr. Culvers perceptions. I wish I could have sat in on evey class he ever taught. Buy this book and you will learn. He will either confirm what you already believe or he may change a few that you do have. God has blessed the world with the publication of this book.

Not just another systematics book
Thoroughly Biblical, clearly written, comprehensive. I took some theology courses and a class on Calvin from Dr. Culver at Trinity, so it's hard not to visualize him as I'm reading. I saw him again several years ago and knew he was working on it. So glad he was finally able to complete it.

Well done for the thinking mind
This exhaustive volume gives a solid historical and biblical foundations to the main biblical doctrines. I was impressed by his exposition on the End Time. Even though he is taught under a dispensational teacher Alva Mclain he did his exposition fair and sound. I appreciate the fact that at least for the doctrine of the end time he did not exposite Scripture according to an assumed system of teaching. This gives me confidence to trust that he struggled with the different Scripture references.
