Snatch, Steelbook

You just have to watch it and decide for yourself, I guess
Someone mentioned this movie at a dinner party a few years back. Described it as 'the funniest movie I have ever seen'. I had not heard of it at the time, although I was familiar with Lock, Stock, etc. Snatch did not disappoint. I laughed so hard at times that I was crying. The cast is remarkably optimal for the film - I can't imagine assembling a better group to highlight the various characters - and the film has its share of 'characters'.. I don't think you can call Snatch 'slapstick', although some of the scenes come close. 'Dark comedy'? Maybe, but it is so much more than that. This is a must see for yourself. I am sure there are some who will watch it, and not make it all the way through. But, if you like British wit in cinema, this is well worth watching. I have watched it numerous times, and STILL laugh, even though i know what's coming.

...where was the OSCAR NOD for....
...BRAD PITT?!?Brilliant, Brad! who was your accent coach?!? Meryl Streep? This movie was hands down a diamond pull out of the coal of, i'm sure, characters from Richie's real back home group of friends. You can't make this stuff up, can you?. And the treasure of throwing in these vignettes/imaginings/comparisons (ie dogs chasing rabbit) juxtaposed against the story was filmmaking at it's finest. I can't believe I am only just now being introduced to the work of this Richie guy....but i'm a California grandma so I guess it makes sense NETFLIX never "recommended" any of his work...There is surely nothing important I can add to the 1,600 other reviews already here but if you need a distraction from your life - the metamorphosis achieved by Benicio (total eye candy) and Brad (riveting as you struggle to understand what he is saying) will keep you in the moment, no matter what your own shattering/PTSD past. In that way, watching this movie is cleansing, like what church or yoga does for some people.….ah and Richie has a NEW movie coming out next year - good news - salvation is again on the horizon - i'll get the ladies from my quilting group together and go to the theater on bended knee, grateful for the break from reality as his next work grabs me once more by the shirt collar and yanks me out of despair! : ) )BRAVO!

Guy Ritche's second great English crime flick
Director Guy Ritchie released several movies about English crime. Snatch was one of the best ones. Like his earlier Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, this one mixed the crime drama with plenty of comedy.First, there’s a large ensemble cast. There’s Franky Four Fingers (Benecio del Toro) who is a thief for American mafioso Cousin Avi (Dennis Farina). People are after Frank because he robbed some diamonds in Antwerp. That includes Boris the Blade (Rade Serbedzija) who hires two pawn shop owners Sol (Lennie James) and Vinny (Robbie Gee) and their friend Tyrone (Ade) to rob Franky. Avi also gets a local tough guy Bullet Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones) to help him get his diamonds back. There’s Turkish (Jason Statham) and Tommy (Stephen Graham) who are into unlicensed boxing and fall into debt to a gangster Brick Top (Alan Ford) when their fighter gets taken out. That leads them to work with a local gypsy Mickey O’Neil (Brad Pitt) as their new boxer. These two stories, Franky’s diamonds and Turkish and Tommy’s debt eventually all come together at the end.Second, there’s lots of funny bits thrown in. Mickey for example can barely be understood with his Gypsy accent. Boris gets shot up and refuses to go down. Sol, Vinny and Tyrone try to rob Franky but blow it and end up trapped inside a gambling joint, use their names so everyone can figure out who they are, and then take off their masks in front of a security camera. They actually end up with Franky’s dead body but then have to decide how to get rid of it.Third the movie contains great music that comes right at the opportune time to push the scene along. You’ve got the crime, you’ve got the characters, you’ve got the jokes, and the music all combining into one great flick.

One OF The Funniest Movies I Have Ever Seen
Brad Pitt as an Irish bare knuckled fighter? Dennis Farina as a Jewish gem investor? Jason Statham as a wise-cracking wise guy? Yep - you get it all and more in this hilarious movie filmed in England. It is one of my top five movies ever. If you are ready for a laugh - and then some - order a copy today.Sample:American Customs official "Sir, do you have anything to declare?"Dennis Farina (as Avi) "Yeah, don't go to England"

Snatch This Up
Quick cuts, multiple plots, and memorable characters. This movie never rests. The main plot centers on a diamond "the size of your fist" which is stolen. The path the diamond takes through the movie follows the myriad characters through their own tribulations. Brad Pitt plays a supporting role as a gypsy "piker" fighter who has his own plans. Jason Stratham plays the main character, a boxing promoter in debt to a psychopathic mobster. Never a good idea. The movie moves around seamlessly between the many stories, never spending too much or too little time on any of them. It is a fast paced film which doesn't linger too long on any one subject. It is not a movie like "Crash", which strained to weave the stories together. This movie instead allows the stories to melt together more organically. It has some serious moments, but they are tempered with comedy. It is violent, but the worst of it is off camera and not in your face. No nudity or sexual situations to speak of. Appropriate for kids 14 and up. Recommended if you are looking for a fast paced movie that will kill a couple hours on a rainy night.

Great Film
What a great film! Brad Pitt comes into his own and portrayals the Gypsy fighter perfectly. Statham is also fantastic. The story line is very good and I love the way the film interchanges from one scene to the next scene whilst keeping you on the edge of your seat. It is certainly worth watching more than once which I undoubtedly will.....buy it, watch and enjoy!

Another winner fro Mr Maddona
Turkish (Jason Statham) and his partner Tommy (Stephen Graham) are boxing deadbeat promoters whose desire for a new caravan plummets them into the nefarious dealings of fight fixing, hit men, gun dealers, Piker gypsys, pawnbrokers, gamblers, body guards and dishonest diamond dealers from both sides of the Atlantic. Ritchie's kinetic first film was a smash in his homeland, but only a cult success in the U.S. With "Snatch" he follows much the same formula but brings in recognizable stars, most notably Brad Pitt as Mickey, an almost incomprehensible Irish bare knuckle fighter who loves his mum. The pace is fast and furious, featuring editting montages comprised of stills and near-stills that are hilariously economical. Ritchie even gets a "Run Lola Run" moment when he shows a fateful dual car crash from opposite perspectives back to back. Ritchie's assembled a terrific ensemble here, from unknowns like Ford, who's magnificently malicious and wickedly witty, to big stars like Pitt, who shines here in a humorous offshoot of his "Fight Club" persona. Ritchie's script may follow a formula, but his lines are deliciously inventive. Be warned, though for all its humor, the film features extreme violence and some gore, but simply put, "Snatch" is a blast. With "Snatch," the director doesn't remake his first work, but he does delve more deeply into the criminal underbelly of London, mining a rich collection of characters in the process. From the very beginning, "Snatch" tosses you into the action with the theft of the fabulous diamond, the desire of New York gangster Avi. En route from Antwerp, diamond thief and courier Frankie Four Fingers stops in London to make a separate deal with Avi's partner and cousin, Doug. Frankie's addiction to gambling tempts him into making a bet on an illegal boxing match for Boris "The Blade" a ruthless Russian mobster. The bet turns out to be a setup for a robbery by a trio of bumbling incompetents that goes miserably awry. Meanwhile, a couple of young toughs, Turkish and Tommy, are trying to break in to the boxing game with the help of local villain Brick Top, who also owns a pig farm. When their first fighter is put out of action, with one punch, by a wild Irish gypsy named Mickey O'Neil, they figure to put the loose canon in as the contender in a fixed fight. Mickey proves less than reliable and goes against Turkish and Tommy's deal. Brick Top, impressed by Mickey's performance, decides to gives them another chance after calmly explaining that it takes 16 pigs about eight minutes to completely devour a corpse. When Avi doesn't get his precious rock, he jumps on a plane for London and hires a local legend, "Bullet Tooth" Tony (Vinnie Jones), to find Frankie and the diamond. Things spiral out of control as all these forces head on a collision course of double-cross and double-deals and a dog that ate a squeaky toy.Understand so Far .................Guy Ritchie has a wonderful knack for pulling together his unique collection of cast and crew and feeding them funny and gritty dialog that spews out of the characters' mouths like machine gun fire. The assemblage of actors and non-actors in rough-and-tumble settings gives "Snatch" an earthy feel in its depiction of London's criminal underworld. The cast of characters is too large to credit here. The outstanding performance is given by none other than Brad Pitt, the name actor the movie's popularity may hang upon, at least initially. Pitt, as Mickey O'Neil, is hard drinking, hard fighting, highly unreliable and nearly incomprehensible with a unique Irish brogue and dialect of the pikers, the Irish travelers of Europe. This gypsy brigand would steal the fillings from your teeth, especially if it would benefit his beloved mum. When Brick Top threaten the safety of Mickey's family, he makes an enemy that cannot be stopped. Pitt puts a credible spin on his character and does some incredible physical stuff, too, as a bare-knuckle boxer. "Snatch" is possibly the most violent screwball comedy you'll ever see. Miscues and misunderstandings are the order of the day here, in a plot so incredibly convoluted it can only have been crafted that way intentionally. But that appears to be Ritchie's aim, this is one instance where the story exists basically as a framework for the movie's humour, rather than having the comedy service the central plotline. Those who can follow all the twists and turns may, in a way, get more out of "Snatch" than those unable to keep up, but this is not a prerequisite to enjoying the film. Most individual scenes work all by themselves -- as long as viewers have a general sense of what's happening, that's all they should need. Nonetheless, "Snatch" remains an entertaining movie for those who don't mind a few bullets and the occasional spattered blood mixed in with their chortles and guffaws. It might not be quite as clever as it thinks it is, but that still ranks it head and shoulders above a lot of other films.

A great British film!
This is up there in my top 5 films, along with Lock Stock. I bought this now as I found my copy was missing. It is great value for money and a brand new seal copy arrived packed great and can't wait to sit down and watch. The same load of great quotes as Lock Stock and you'll always recall the Russian reference and the one about pigs! The inter linking story lines and the mix of actors are first class. I won't attempt to write up the story line, but it is something which should be on everyone's must watch list.

I'll watch it again one day.
I like it, means 4 stars.Brad Pitt plays an interesting part, very well I thought.Vinnie Jones, looks really menacing. It's a violent comedy, but the blood and guts are reserved. What I mean is a lot of the violence is left to the imagination. And the film is all the better for that.I enjoyed it, first time I've seen it.I think I will watch it again one day.
