Secrets of a Pro
Parents of anxious children must read this book. It is the best layman’s book for treating childhood anxiety that I have read.Dr. Albano is one of the country’s leading researchers on childhood anxiety, and an astute practitioner as well. She has written an accessible and helpful guide for parents to address their child’s anxiety. The brilliance of the book is that it takes the techniques of seasoned professionals who know the research on what works, and effectively introduces these techniques to parents. I am a psychiatrist, and even I was impressed with Dr. Albano’s jargon-free explanations of major types of childhood anxiety (separation anxiety, generalized anxiety, and social phobia), and how parents can employ cognitive-behavioral techniques with their children to overcome this anxiety. In reading the book, I was reminded of the clever techniques an expert like Dr. Albano can employ to teach children to manage and diminish their anxiety. The techniques are so useful that I will use them invigorate my own practice.Dr. Albano’s emphasis on teaching parents to stop counterproductively protecting their anxious child is a frank and welcome bit of hard-won wisdom. She also wisely suggests trying therapy before medication – successful therapy can teach a child to manage and overcome the child’s own anxiety, where medication (which is what I often prescribe) does not offer this (relatively) permanent solution. On the other hand, she does not discount medication in certain situations. She also offers parents reasonable advice in how to select a therapist. This is a book I will unhesitatingly recommend to parents of anxious children.

Wonderful book!
Wow! AWESOME BOOK!I have an 10-year-old boy with anxiety about so many things. For years now I haven't known what to do with him. But this book has literally changed our lives! Dr. Albano's advice is spot on. She's detailed and concrete and tells the reader exactly what to do to alleviate the anxiety. And not only that, she shows all these examples of kids with anxiety, so you can see all the different ways anxiety manifests itself in kids. I wish this book had been around for me and my son years ago.Not only is this book incredibly helpful, it's also REALLY well-written and fun to read! I know, you wouldn't think a book about childhood anxiety would be fun to read. But somehow, the authors did it with this one. GREAT GREAT BOOK!

Very Useful
It took me a while to read this book. Why? Because, while I was in the middle of it, my friend expressed to me some concerns about her child. I then loaned it to her. She found it helpful and loaned it to her sister in law. They both found the information helpful. When I finally got it back, I began reading again.I wish I had had this practical advice years ago. My anxious child is now almost 19 and I think it would have been very helpful. I have now given her my copy so that she can have it as a resource. The writing is accessible. The cases are touching. This is a useful tool to have in your library.

Outstanding Resource!
This is a wonderful resource for someone trying to help a child, an adolescent, or a young adult deal with anxiety. It is also very helpful for someone who is trying to help himself/herself overcome anxiety issues. The anecdotes, the prescribed exercises, and the explanations are all extremely beneficial. I highly recommend this book! It may be the best I've seen for anxiety disorder.

Starting the book with parent blaming is not helpful
It's clear the author has had a lot of experience in a clinical setting where parent blaming is common. I'm sure there are situations in which parents can hinder a child's ability to move past version anxieties, however clinical anxiety is not caused by 'good parenting' as the author patronizingly refers to it. I have twin boys, one with social anxiety and one without. Same parenting methods. I call shenanigans on this book and returned it for a refund. Not helpful.
