Valley Stream (Images of America)

Nice book for those who live or once lived in Valley Stream.

As a longtime Valley Stream resident, and someone who has corresponded with Mr. Florio, and respects his knowledge I eagerly anticipated publication of this book. I was not disappointed. The variety of high-quality photos, anecdotes, and snippets of history almost enable the reader to travel in time. How many people know that Valley Stream was once called "Rum Junction," and was replete with swank hotels, watering holes, and jazz clubs? Sadly, Valley Stream's downtown business establishments have, thus far, not been able to compete very well with Green Acres Mall, built in 1956. With the interest engendered by this book, and the enthusiasm of Mr. Florio and other young mavens of their home town, Valley Stream seems poised for a renaissance.

I guess I expected more. so many photos of Rockaway ave and Merrick Road but few of actual neighborhood blocks. I was disappointed. I actually have a photo of my house here in Valley Stream being built in 1940 that was given to us by the original owner who we purchased our house from. I really would have liked to see more photos like that one to compare with our residential streets now. our block actually had a farm on the corner and was a dead end block. Even old Model T cars parked on the block was neat to see. I wish I would have thought to somehow give that photo to the editor but I didn't know at the time about the book.

Wish there had been a little more history--needs more verbiage--pictures are good, but I would like to have read more about the history!

would have given it 5 stars but it was more or less a photo album and missed alot about the heart of "home" or Valley Stream

Love the book grew up in Valley Stream, NY lots of great memory's. All the photos take me back.
