Great, pedals but the protection doesn't do anything.
Great pedals. I use these on my all mountain bike (Specialized Enduro) in really rough, rocky terrain in the summer and on my fat bike in the winter. The only critique is that the "cage" around the core is not worth the extra weight if you're interested in extra protection. It doesn't seem to add that much protection. The only scratches I have on the pedals are on the clip/binding from rocks and not on the cage. On the plus side I think the cages offer more support to the foot which is nice for my 11.5 sized foot on long, techy downhills.Performance wise these are excellent, clip in and out fast. I do a few enduro races and these are excellent for racing, reliable in mud, fast to reconnect out of a sharp switchback. In the winter on snowy trails they can ice up in a few conditions, when it's borderline freezing (25-30F), and keep you from clipping in. Much better than slogging in flats though.

Solid!!! Way to solid!!!
Before I bought these petals I was a diehard fan of crank Brothers candy pedals which I have been using for the past eight years. I initially went with crank brothers because of the light weight nature of their petals compared to the Shimano alternative. I bought these XTR petals because last week my Candy petals decided that eight years was enough and literally snapped in half under load. Immediately after I was going to get another set of candy's but noticed that the price of the candies was 50% higher than the XTR's despite being almost identical in wait. I guess you could say over the last eight years my preference for lightweight has evolved into more of a preference for extreme durability and everything I've heard about these petals indicates such. So far these petals are flawless and I do like the adjustable tension even though I don't have it set very high, but I guess only time will tell if these petals hold up, but so far they seem super solid. I will try and write a follow-up review in approximately a year.

Great pedal
I totally love these pedals!!!! Of course, I like riding bikes, so maybe I'm easy to please. Still, they are lightweight, reliable. They are easy to engage and easy to disengage from. I expect a cheaper pedal would work nearly as well, but these are great.

Great pedal, replacing Time pedals on MTB and Crank ...
Great pedal, replacing Time pedals on MTB and Crank Brothers on commuter. Positive clip in, predictable out. This is a much better alternative to the Time pedals that I loved than anything else I have tried. Cleats are steal, not brass so they will last much longer than Time or Crank Brothers cleats. I have tried other SPD compatible pedals, but they all felt sloppy while clipped in. These pedals, at least so far, are very positive with minimal resistance in the float helping to keep you centered, similar to the Time pedals. If you are moving from a different pedal platform, this is worth a shot, especially for the price on Amazon.Rididng: Nomad C, XTR shifting, XTR Disk Brakes, XT Cranks, 2x10

Excellent pedals
I’m using these on my carbon road bike. Don’t judge. Yes, they’re slightly heavy for that purpose, but they have enough platform to let me jump on with flip flops for a quick ride, or to use spd cleats and ride around town, getting off for errands. Should’ve switched from road pedals to these long ago - makes it so much easier to go ride. Not as easy to find an excuse to talk myself out of riding the bike.

Pricy
These are great pedals. Only rate 4 stars since they are truely functionally indistinguishable from the 540 SPD that are less than half the price. I wanted to try the platforms but really I didn't need to bother. There's no practical difference that I can tell. All Shimano's virtues are apparent here. Extremely durable, reliable, easy in, easy out, not too heavy, rebuildable, cleats last a couple seasons, shed mud and grit and just work year after year.

Great pedals that do everything well.
These are the only brand of pedals I have used but I have never had an issue with them so I have stayed with them. They are tough and well made; entry and exit are easy, as is installation. No regrets. I saw some that were more colorful and attractive at over twice the cost but pedals get scuffed and these are a great value.

Would recommend for adventure or trail
I put these on a specialized diverge adventure bike I intend to use 80% road and 20% light trail. They work with my road shoes (spd) just fine. Very easy to clip in and break out of. The platform is large enough that a road shoe can find footing until the clip is found and locked - great in an emergency need to spin the crank.
