Solid commentary
I am using this commentary along with two others to help me study the book of James. This is a solid commentary with useful insight and helpful references. It is helpful to use multiple commentaries and I am also using Douglas Moo's "The Letter of James" (Pillar New Testament Commentary) and Daniel Doriani's "James" (Reformed Expository Commentary). The latter is giving me a decent high level overview of the text and Moo's commentary is giving me the most helpful explanations. However, all three are useful in their own way and round out my understanding of the book of James.

Great Read.
Read everything by Alec Motyer. He was a Christian and then a teacher of the Bible before he was anything else.

Not what I expected
This isn't what I expected. I found it to be dry and not interpretive at all. I have become accustomed to commentaries that get at the meaning of the words and the times in which the Bible book was written. I may use it as an occasional reference but will look for a different commentary of James.

Great little commentary
I have been very pleased with Motyer's commentary on James. Best-known for his Isaiah commentary, the thread of his insights into imago dei and how that plays out in the two tables of the Decalogue are very useful in considering James. If preaching or teaching in James, a great resource.

commentary
Like new and prompt effective shipping...the writer is a respected commentator with in depth and thoughtful comments and though I do not agree with a few of his points he does make a good logical case for his views worthy of a place in your library
