Understanding Animal Welfare: The Science in its Cultural Context

Clearly written and very thoughtful introduction to the complexities of animal welfare. We used this as our textbook for a graduate class, and it was unusually accessible while giving a nuanced view of welfare issues. Lots of examples from the scientific literature and a good framing of the interaction between scientific/other approaches to welfare and values.

This book was for a veterinary ethics class. The class didn't add much to the book, unfortunately, but it speaks to how well put-together it is (the book, not the class, hah). It is not a long book, but it contains a lot of good stuff. I have since recommended it to quite a few of people.

Essential read for anyone studying animal welfare
