Masterpiece Classic: Classic English Literature 1

Disclosure: I have not played any of the movies, unsure of the playback qualityI bought this for all the little replicas it comes with, which were of a very nice quality that I'll enjoy decorating my home library with.The couple of the films/miniseries I have seen were pretty enjoyable but I haven't played any of them off these discs yet.

Good film set but unfortunately just as in the second volume of this set one of the films is poorly made it transferred to DVD. This time it is the movie Jane Eyre. Not sure if it's because this film along with the movie, The Turn of the Screw, in vol.#2 are both made in a letter box style, but both have white lines that run at the top of the screen while the movie plays. Not sure if I can get anything done about it or not. I might contact Amazon to see what they suggest. I made a similar review for the other volume of this set.

I got this for myself after seeing "Great Expectations" on PBS. So, I was very glad to add that to my collection. I also have the movie version directed by David Lean, and I like both of them. Though I love Gillian Anderson and she gives a fine portrayal, in my book the definitive performance of Miss Havisham is that given by Martita Hunt in the Lean version. But don't let that sway you away from this collection. This is a great version of "Great Expectations." It is lush and beautiful. "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights" are both top notch productions as well. I have watched these repeatedly. "Northanger Abbey" is quite enjoyable, but for me, the first three I mentioned are the reason to get this set.As to the extras, I didn't give them much thought as I really just wanted to have the DVD titles in my collection; however, I got this set as a birthday gift for a friend, and she went wild about the extras. That made me take a look at those in my set, and indeed, they are interesting. But, the reason to get this set is that you are getting four excellent productions of classics frpm English literature. If you're at all interested in this and are wavering, get them. I think you'll be glad that you purchased them.

Just got this in the mail today and I'm so excited, being a fan of history I love the memorabilia included in the set. And can't wait to watch the movies! The collection as a whole is so enticing! I'm excited to add it to my collection!

This is a great collection - and the documents included are interesting to read! There are many more papers for Dickens than the other three authors, but that is understandable based on their differences in popularity at the times that they were all alive. I absolutely love Jane Eyre and Nothanger Abby, and this these adaptations are very well done. I have never been much of a fan of Wuthering Heights (too depressing for my taste), but this was a great adaptation of it regardless. The Great Expectations is also very well done.

I am very pleased with this purchase. I bought it because Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson was in the selections. I love it! I am happy that I bought it!

Bought this for a historical drama fan and it was the perfect gift. All are new versions of timeless classics. Actors portrayed the characters well and story was true to the original plots. Authentic dress, speech and mannerisms against superb backdrops and props made these just beautiful. Booklet of special contributions regarding the dramas was a perfect resource to get more up close and personal with the movies.Recommend for the British historical movie drama lover.

I love period dramas; collect the Victorian and early 19th writers stories that have been made into movies ( series collections) from BBC or Acorn and others.I was not disappointed with this collection as the adaptations and actors are new to me. Watched Jane Eyre ( have 3 adaptations) over a weekend as a JE binge. Thank-you for having many of the dramas available. Have purchased Forsyte saga and Grand Hotel.

I enjoy the classics and of course Masterpiece Theatre. Although I have seen all the movies with various actors, I enjoyed immensely the different actors, landscape and period costume. The boxed presentation and enclosed information was a delightful surprise. The image and sound were clear. A great bargain!

Great Masterpiece collection. I recommend it to everyone. Must see.

This is the perfect gift for anyone who loves classic English literature done up as only Masterpiece theatre can do it. Lots of interesting extras too.

Great box set that not only includes wonderful adaptations of beloved novels, but also comes with some interesting extras. I would highly recommend it.
