Autism and Reading Comprehension: Ready-to-use Lessons for Teachers

Most Valuable Book for Teaching Reading Comprehension for ANY kid
I have searched high and low. This is the only one so far that is close to what a reading comprehension instructional book should be. It's written for teachers by a teacher. I encourage not just parents of autistic children but all parents to read and use this book. It's worth its weight in gold I dare say.

I waited so long for this book. But each minute worth it!I just opened and had a glance. Amazed to see the amount of wholesome effort that has gone in.Step by step instruction for the parents and teachers what to teach.Complete printable study materials provided with accompanying CD.A score card tracking sheet to monitor the progress! What else we need? The price is very reasonable!I am a lazy parent but still motivated enough to sit down and teach my son. Because I am equipped with all I need to conduct a good session!I will keep posting my son progress with this book!Once again, tons of thanks to the author and publishers!

Just what I was looking for
I don't often take the time to review products on Amazon, but this one is so worthwhile! My daughter was reading at a 2nd grade level but didn't seem to understand the information she would read. I found this product while randomly looking on Amazon and thought it was worth a try. Oh My! I am so grateful that I stumbled upon it. We are only on the 6th week of the program (we are doing 2 weeks / animal). My daughter went from not being able to form a complete written sentence 6 weeks ago, to not only reading the story but reading the questions and answering in complete sentences in proper form. I am thrilled with the results and look forward to completing the program.Yes, there is a lot of repetition. In the beginning I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it... but it wouldn't matter, cause this has become the HIGHLIGHT of our homework time together. She loves the predictability and stability of the lessons. She is eager to do her "quality work" and wants to do it independently! As a parent, I especially appreciate the availability of the CD-ROM so that I can print worksheets as needed and not worry about making copies.I do agree with another review that the lessons are probably geared more for elementary students; but may be useful for older students with cognitive impairments.Thank you for a great program!

Not for children with cognitive impairments, ADHD, or fine motor difficulties
I like a lot of things about this curriculum, but I don't feel that it was described well in the product overview. Within the first few paragraphs, the author says this book won't work well with children with cognitive impairments...but I would add to that list myself. Aftering much, not all, of the book, I feel that there is a limited set of children who will benefit from this approach. I don't see non-verbal children or children who can't write or draw doing well. I may be wrong, but it seems like a curriculum designed for children with autism who have no other disabilities, such as ADHD, fine motor delays, or cognitive impairments. I'd just like to see it labeled better before people spend their money on something that they cannot use. Also, much of the book focused on whole group instruction, although I suppose that you could use it 1:1 as well.

Very elementary
My son is in 5th grade and struggles with reading comprehension. This books is way too elementary for him and probably for a functionally average child with autism. No higher than 1st grade level.I bought 2 copies and am returning them both

I was homeschooling her for Kindergarten and later switched her an amazing private school
I bought this book to help my 5 year daughter with autism to understand reading comprehension. I was homeschooling her for Kindergarten and later switched her an amazing private school. This book will remain with us in case there are ever any issues int he future. It is a GREAT book with LOTS of detailed explanations and the website to print from is a easy to use. Don't get overwhelmed by it's big size once you receive it. The instructions are clear and I love the fact that you can go to website to print out all the worksheets and instructions for free. No need to photocopy or write in the book. What a helpful tool from the author. We so appreciate it.

A great addition to a reading curriculum, designed for lower-functioning autism/lower level readers
I really want to give this 3 and half stars. I used it daily in my self-contained autism classroom (the kids were all on about a Kindergarten or 1st grade reading level). The lessons are fantastic in that they change the details just a bit and teach the kids to not just memorize, but actually pay attention to the details. I liked that there was a disk to print from. The sentence building lesson was great and really helped my students to learn graphic organizers and brain storming. My only complaint, which it why I knocked it down a star (and a half) is that the worksheets had a LOT of typos in them. One of the worksheets says "the brown rabbit has long ears. The yellow rabbit can hop." There's only one rabbit pictured on the worksheet. It looks as though the worksheets were rushed and not thoroughly edited. I had to cross out the second color and that messed up the flow, so my students, who have a very hard time paying attention to details and don't fully comprehend what they are reading anyway, would miss the second rabbit in the sentence and think it was totally fine. (This only happens when you are printing from the disk. The worksheets IN the book are fill-in-the-blank.)Overall, I LOVE the concept, the lessons were perfectly straightforward and worked well when I had subs in the classroom. It's a great addition to your reading curriculum when trying to get the students to really pay attention to details and not just memorize the books.

Even better than I expected!
This author should write curriculum! Not only have I used this book for students with autism (and it is fantastic!), but it shows huge success for my students with Down's Syndrome! The lessons are clearly laid out, even down to providing a list of materials needed for each. Every single worksheet is in a CD, all ready to print, saving me hours standing over the copier. Most importantly, it goes in such a step-by-step, sequentially building manner, I don't have to worry about finding a way to bridge between one lesson and the next for struggling students! I cannot say enough about this book!

I bought this for my son's school, he is autistic and struggles to comprehend what he has read. He is ten and though the lessons may appear young for him he is moving through it at a good pace and this is giving him confidence. The school liked it so much they bought their own copy.

Good resource
This is a good and well structured scheme to support early comprehension and inference, often a difficulty for young children with autism. Would suit those working at P levels or those with obvious difficulty in this area.

Some good ideas but...
It's ok but nothing spectacular. There are plenty similar resources out there that are free.
