Mexico Profundo: Reclaiming a Civilization

We need to reclaim our civilization now
What perfect time to read such a book. With the protests regarding "Black Lives Matter" and the support of so many young people to change institutions that are not serving society, this book bu Guillermo Batalla speaks to Mexican culture and the indigenous peoples. The basic premise that we have left people behind and not recognized what they have contributed to our own culture is inherent in the words of Batalla. It will open your mind to see the world as it is, and not as we have thought it was. Change our minds and we can change our world.

In Pursuit of Understanding Mexico Today
This is a powerful analysis of Mexico and the continuing esistence of the civilization encountered by the Spanish. This insight delivered by Bonfil Batalla is a must for understanding Mexico with application to the larger question of indigenous peoples in all the Americas, including strands of thought for some understanding of its application to Mexican-American and Chicano culture. A must read for those pursuing greater understanding of this powerful encounter and history.

Wow! What an eye-opener!
Wow! What an eye-opener! Who knew there were more Indians in Mexico City than anywhere else?I always knew in a vague way that the Indians in Mexico never went away. And I knew they loved citiesand had a huge and very ancient civilization. I just did not know that it had survived as well as the authordescribes. I cannot recommend this book more highly. The author is a major anthropologist, but the bookis written for the well educated lay public.

Must READ for all Mexicans.
This book should be required reading in EVERY High School and university in Mexico and everywhere else. This book will explain how we Mexicans have multiple identities. Learn your history, Bonfil Batalla does an EXCELLENT job deciphering why we, Mexicans, see each other as we do today.

Decolonization
This book is a wonderful read that focuses on the importance of taking pride in our Nican Tlaca (We People Here) pride. In other words, being proud of our indigenous roots and to take off the mask of assimilation. To take a deep understanding of our past before the European invasion of our lands all starting in 1492. A must have.

Looking deeper into Mexico
This book takes on the myth of a homogeneous Mexican culture in which the Spanish and Indigenous cultures have properly mixed. Instead it tells the story of two separate cultures: one, the dominant culture which rules Mexico socially, politically, and economically, and of the second culture, the Indigenous culture which lives and thrives underneath the dominant one. Often times the dominant culture will share pride in it's Indigenous past, praising the Aztecs, using their imagery and glory, while at the same time ignoring, suppressing, and often marginalizing its indigenous present. It is this hypocrisy or duality (depending on your point of view) that this book takes on.
