Teacher

I read this book many, many years ago when I was just beginning my career as a primary teacher. Slyvia Aston-Warner was a brilliant teacher and her innovative approach to teaching Maori children is as valid today as it was when it was first demonstrated in 1965. I used this system of teaching early reading. not only in my Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms but also with my children and grandchildren. It is particularly useful for children who do not immediately respond to other methods of teaching reading such as totally phonetic or whole language approaches. It can easily be included as a quick and easy supplement to any reading program. This is a particularly valid approach to underprivileged and resource-deprived classrooms.

Totally not what I expected

I love this book! Every first grade teacher should teach reading as this teacher does. And every kindergarten teacher should use it in the Spring to help children prepare for first grade. So kind to children. So understanding.

Years ago I used Sylvia Ashton-Warner's approach with my first graders who were native English speakers. Every morning they chose a word and that was their word for the day. Their collection of words were usually the first words they read.

The book has transcended decades of fads in education. It is still the definitive work on learning and teaching, and very useful to anyone who cares about the student.

I have wantred to read this for a long time. It copletely lived up to expectatrons.

Probably dated but I am glad someone (a teacher) told me about it and I was able to read it.

Came too late for class luckily I could check it out from library. It was more than one week too late. Took over 3 weeks to mail . ???

Good story.

I was left disappointed as I read the first few pages...to my dismay it looked like a pirated copy. It has many typos and I can't be sure if parts have been left out or changed in places. The original I think also has pictures but this has none.I wish there was sure way of knowing this before I placed the order.
