The Interview [Blu-ray]

Aims high at multiple satirical targets and mostly hits the mark
After all of the controversy surrounding the Sony hack and the "will-they, won't they" release strategy, was THE INTERVIEW worth all of the fuss? Of course not, it's just a movie. Still, after removing all of the hype, it was still a really good one. It might not hit all of its satirical targets dead-on, but for what it's worth, it did what a comedy is supposed to do and made me laugh. A lot. The basic plot, which probably everyone and their mother is familiar with by now whether or not they've actually seen it, is that Dave Skylark (James Franco) and Aaron Rapaport (Seth Rogen) have a TV show where they do celebrity interviews/fluff pieces. When they learn that North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un is a big fan of the show, they secure an interview with him. When the CIA learns about this, they co-opt Dave and Aaron to kill Kim. First things first, there is a lot more going on in the film than the depiction of the assassination of a current world leader. Early on, when we are introduced to Dave and Aaron, they use that opportunity to take shots at the banality of entertainment news. Not quite original, and they don't really follow through with it later, but it was still good for some laughs. Even before that, the film opens in North Korea during a televised missile launch and a young girl singing death to America and how great North Korea is. This was funny on two levels: First, for the sheer audacity and shock value, and second, because it's frighteningly close to real life. That was probably the best part of the film, but what follows was still extremely entertaining. After Dave and Aaron finally get to North Korea, things slow down a bit as Dave begins to buddy up with Kim and we get to see that he's human like the rest of us. Aside from the opening sequence, this is probably the greatest insight the film has into the way North Korea works. Not just a brutal dictatorship, but also hereditary, the Kims are revered as gods. However, once the illusion of omnipotence is shattered, the North Korean people would probably react the way they do in the film. Destroy his image and humanize him, and they would probably never follow him again, much less look at him in the way they do now. The third act brings things back to the pace of the first act, but still devolves into a standard action climax. As for the much-talked-about death scene, I didn't think it was too special but the choice of music was pretty fitting. When all is said and done, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have made a film which fits in nicely with the type of stuff they've been making for the last 10 years, but it was a little better because the material was more current and had some immediacy to it. There was probably a little more anatomy-based humor than I would have liked, but more jokes hit than missed. Overall, if you're a fan of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's previous work than you'll probably like this. If not, be warned. For me, I laughed my butt off for two hours and had a great time.

One of the Great Movies of All Time
This historically accurate documentary traces the journey of two journalists in their quest to meet and interview the leader of North Korea. Things don't go well. This is a must-see for any serious students of the Korean conflict.

From The guys that brought Us: "This is The End", "Neighbors", "Pineapple Express", and "The Green Hornet"
The most Controversial movie of 2014 comes home on blu-ray! For those of you hoping for the greatest movie ever let me clue you in on something.1. Massive controversy, doesn't make for a great film ( This Movie is made by the guys who are responsible for the movies i mentioned in my headline so set those expectations to well... those types of expectations)2. If you were never really a fan of the previous films this isn't going to convert you at all. This film i thought was really funny, and beautifully shot, seriously, the cinematagraphy is awesome, James franco and Seth Rogen are wonderful together their chemistry is just dynamite, Randall Park is also really funny as "Kim Jung un" ( i hope i spelled that right) for me the movie a Hilarious ride, but once they arrived in North Korea i could not stop laughing! There are too many scenes to mention, like the scene between Rogen and the tiger, Kim and Dave partying and when the Dave Skylark Interview happens, its amazing! It was funny it was suspenseful and really tense i really enjoyed this movie.

It is your patriotic duty as an American to watch this movie. This is who we are.
And, having said that, let me backtrack and say that you will definitely not enjoy this movie unless you are a fan or at least somewhat tolerant of the sort of humor that is the trademark of Seth Rogen - James Franco movies. But you should still give it a five star rating, because the very release of this movie required a stand against terrorism and tyranny, a grotesque effort by others to suppress freedom of speech right here in America.Shame on all of the big theater chains who refused to show this movie. I would have given you money to see it in your theaters, and instead, I had to rent this movie here on Amazon, a first for me, in order to watch it from the comfort of my own home on my big screen TV.I thought the movie was funny, not as funny as "This is the End", but a real effort to poke serious fun at the hypocrisy of the North Korean regime, and not exactly sparing of U.S. foreign policy either. The subject matter is something that is hardly ever explored. Have we not had enough of super hero movies, war movies, romantic comedies, etc., etc.?I liked this smart and funny movie a lot, apart from all the political implications. And here's the biggest political implication of all, magnified by the recent Charlie Hebdo attacks:We cannot, must not allow terrorists and tyrants to restrict our freedom of speech. That goes for everybody, not just North Koreans and radical jihadist Muslims, but fundamentalist Christians and ultra-nationalist defenders of Israel as well. Humor, gross out humor even, is the best weapon against those who would destroy our freedom. If these people are so afraid of a comedy movie, a satirical cartoon newspaper, what does it say about how secure they are about their own beliefs?Let's go out there and support this movie!

Dire
One reviewer said this was for the under 30's. I disagree, it's for the under 14's. Coupled with the fact that it's juvenile it's also so badly written that you know exactly what is going to happen next all the way through. And I'm someone who rarely predicts correctly who the murderer is in 'whodunnit' films, so if I knew what was coming next it's got to be bad.My husband managed 45 minutes of this film before giving up, I ploughed on til the end. And regretted doing so. A dreadful film that could have been good given the subject matter.

Not the best film but still i did enjoy it.
A Moderately funny film that makes some very accurate notes on North Korea, needless to say it wasnot quite what I expected, they could have done more with it. But still it's just a bit of fun hence whythe north Korean government hated it, it's just a bit of fun.

Worth buying just to promote awareness of North Koreas evil dictatorship.
Not all that hilarious, but light hearted and watchable. Some of the scenes presented as comedy, actually happen in Pyongyang, such as fake shops for instance.

Funny As..
Hilarious Seth Rogen film, made even better by the fact that it was banned and want allowed to be showed for several months, its a typical comedy by Rogen and Franco, if you have seen there other movies like Pineapple Express and you liked it you will enjoy this.
