Product Description Two-time Academy Award®-winner Sally Field (1984, Actress in a Leading Role, Places in the Heart), flies in and out of trouble as Sister Bertrille in this classic and timeless series. Always with benevolent aims, Sister Bertrille gets into all kinds of hysterical situations and manages to get in trouble with Sister Jaqueline (Marge Redmond), with the Reverend Mother Superior (Madeleine Sherwood) and with a local clubowner, Carlos Ramirez (Alejandro Rey). From being mistaken for enemy aircraft to having a pelican fall in love with her to disrupting a meeting of mobsters, Sister Bertrille constantly manages to find herself in precarious and hilarious situations. .com Sally Field parlayed her winsome TV personality honed in Gidget into the unlikely hit The Flying Nun from 1967 to 1970. Field plays Sister Bertrille, a 90-pound novice nun assigned to a crumbling convent in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the gusty winds and her order's seagull-shaped headgear combine to give her the ability to zoom around the Caribbean helping her fellow sisters and the kids attending their school. While most of us remember the flying part--and what a great fantasy for kid viewers, especially--the gist of the series focused more about Sister Bertrille's naiveté and of her youthful determination to make changes in her stuffy convent. Sister Bertrille provides a lot of fish-out-of-water appeal, and the supporting cast is extremely likable, including the narrator, Sister Jacqueline (the great character actress Marge Redmond), and a young Shelley Morrison, who plays the American-slang-mangler Sister Sixto ("She's sharp as a tick!"), and who would go on to play poker-faced Rosario on Will & Grace. Sister Bertrille's character also owes more than a nod to Maria von Trapp; she even gets the orphan students out of their scratchy uniforms and into comfier duds, though admittedly not made of Austrian drapes. The scrapes Sister Bertrille gets into are pretty standard '60s sitcom fare, but Field's sweet earnestness gives the show appeal beyond the sum of its pieces. --A.T. Hurley

Would've been nice to include promos & "Screen Gems" logo.....
The picture and sound quality on this set are both great, but I'm giving "The Flying Nun: Season 1" four out of five stars on two minor points: the lack of bonus material (except for a brief but informative interview with Sally Field), and the omission of the original "Screen Gems" logo at the end of all but one episode included here.To fans of sixties tv (and mostly we're the ones who are buying these sets), the logo is as much a part of these shows as the opening and closing credits. I understand why Sony would want to include their own logo at the very end of each episode, but I hope they will also restore the Screen Gems logo not only to future releases of this series, but to the end of all Screen Gems shows from this era (Monkees, I Dream of Jeannie, Hazel, etc.)Also, it would be nice to see some of the network promos I remember on ABC included as extras; I'd be willing to pay a few dollars extra for each set just for the nostalgia of being able to watch these again.....

Just Plain Fun to Watch
I'm a big fan of the 60's sitcoms, when innocence still dominated prime-time. The Flying Nun is a perfect example of how much fun television used to be. Sally Field was perfect for this role. She was bright, energetic, and funny. The rest of the cast took their roles very seriously, but still acted with much warmth and heart.Although this show is very innocent by today's standards, there was some sexual innuendo throughout the show with Carlos and his "lady-friends". But you really had to read between the lines for that. The special effects on the show are dated by today's standards, but were very much first rate for the 1960's. The sound on the episodes has been restored to original quality. The picture quality is fabulous. I just recently viewed an old videotape of the Flying Nun from when Screen Gems had "vintage episodes" tapes, and the difference is remarkable. It's like going from rabbit ears to cable. This is a fun show for kids and kids at heart like myself. If you like fun fantasy and have never seen "The Flying Nun", check out the show that made Sally Field a household name.

The Flying Nun First Season
The Flying Nun(1967-1970) is a fun, squeaky clean TV show from the 1960's. Sally Field has no special feelings toward it. She claims it almost ruined her career. The show is based on a children's book called The 15th Pelican. Field plays Sister Bertrille, a 98 pound nun from the United States of America who is transfered to a crumbling church in Puerto Rico. Her clothing and the strong tropical winds give her the ability to fly. The Flying Nun was spoofed on The Simpsons with Bart waiting for Homer to pick him up from soccer practice. During a storm, Bart sees Sister Bertrille smash into a hill and explode into a fireball. The visual effects used to make Sally Field fly are quite good. Alejandro Rey plays a nightclub owner who befriends Sister Bertrille. The show's upbeat, whimsical music is good. The Flying Nun is a guilty pleasure from the past.

Fabulous!
I had forgotten how wonderful this show was until I got this recently! How fun! The flying effect is almost hilarious, you can see the lines at times as she flies and it is just so low tech compared to what we are used to nowadays! I loved the fun running plot of the gambling womanizing wealthy man on the island all of a sudden helping the convent after seeing the Flying Nun fly. And seeing the hip portrayals of go go dancers in cages, etc. at Carlos' casinos is aged and funny too. Sally Field moves on from Gidget into this role with spunk: she comments when the sisters pick her up upon arriving at the convent that she was recently arrested at a free speech rally! The scenery is stunning: the red-tiled roof of the convent hanging on the cliff over the ocean is gorgeous...not sure where they filmed those shots, but the old cobbled streets and tight neighborhoods look authentic. A light-hearted, kindly tv series worthy of a second watch.

There is no era like SIMPLE PLEASURES ARE THE BEST ARE THE BEST IN ALL THE WORLD (Van Camps) theme pork and beans. That is what Flying Nun & That Girl IS The simple pleasures that WERE and STILL are the BEST to me anyway. God Bless Them Both as they say in The Air Force….GOOD JOB, FIVE STARS :)

Not family friendly
For those who call it squeaky clean, it's Not. There is a playboy as a main character. He drinks, owns a bar and dance hall (where we focus on a lot of women in tight clothes shaking their a$$es, and revealing cleavage.) He tries hard to get a new woman each time to go away with him for a weekend. There's lots of snogging. He owns a yacht where we view rows of bikini stuffers, and if not there, then at the pool. Sprinkling in a few bad actors playing nuns doesn't make it clean. It's goofy, silly, and shows the 7 deadly sins as cute, fun, and apparently fools some viewers into believing it's wholesome. No wonder the world's a mess if we consider this good entertainment.

Bad Habit, Good DVD
The discs play clear and are well packaged. There is a good featurette starring Sally field that gave a certain insight into the show, Sally's state of mind while it was being produced and the times of the show. The series itself is very light and easy to watch (in small doses, for me).I recommend this if you like Sally Field, very light comedy, sitcoms of the sixties or easy family viewing shows.
