Gold Shadow

One of the best albums I've bought in quite a while. Discovering this man and his music is a huge breath of fresh air. America in general would be happy to become aware of him. His voice is, of course, his signature attraction--at least at first hearing. But just as we quickly came to love unique singing voices like Joplin, Joe Cocker, Bob Dylan, etc., I at least, have come to truly treasure this gift. And then when you look beyond the voice to his lyrics, you find an even greater talent. The words pour out of him, often in torrents, loaded with poetic devices far beyond what you find in most current pop and rock. "Gold Shadow" comes to mind with both internal and end rhyme, along with "Labyrinth Song" which just gushes forth with passion. "Fair Haired Traveler" is his gentlest love song, melodic and heart tugging, and "Bang Bang" is a love song with imagery so powerful it will give all but a stone chills.Mostly his themes here deal with relationships, but some songs hit at political themes too. And his delivery of every song on the album is pitch perfect. Here is a man who sings with conviction and passion, not just technique.Asaf Avidan is one of the world's treasures that can lift us out of our worries and ourselves and transform reality. At least for the time you get to spend with him in this album.

bought it, loved it, bought another one for my kids birthday, who also loved it, and there's quite an age difference between us. What a voice, the whole album is a treat. I heard him on NPR and knew I had to get it. I think so far this is the best he's put out, I also have Different Pulses and it's nice, but this album is just so cool. I've played it over and over on some days haven't gotten sick of it yet, it just gets better.

Stunning. My wife offered me that record. At the beginning I was surprised and a bit unsure, this very unusual voice and the emotional intensity caught me off guard. After a few listening sessions, I cannot get enough of it. The songwriting and interpretation are gripping, haunting, majestic, flamboyant, and it does not hurt that the arrangement and production are superb.Major major major major (did I say major?) talent. Wow.

I was so happy he released a new album. I could not purchase previous ones becaus either they were not available or too expensive. This one is great. His voice is spooky and almost female like with the melody and different tones of music the effect is beautiful. Each song is different and text really lovely. It was a great purchase and I gave this album to few of my friends and they loved it as well.

ok, I just received this CD today, and the music is excellent, BUT when I put it in my player, the artist, the name of the CD and all of the tracks have the wrong name. Showing up as Marianne Faithfull Folk 2014 as the name of the album...can't even begin to list the names of the tracks which are all wrong too. What's up with that?

Asaf Avidan is one of the most unique voices of our time. The production and song-writing on this disc is stellar.

Manchmal frage ich mich, ist Asaf Avidan die Reinkarnation von Janis Joplin. Nein, natürlich nicht. Er ist, ohne Janis in das musikalische Abseits zu stellen, meinem Erachten nach wesentlich interessanter. Mit dem nunmehr erschienenen „Gold Shadow“ bietet er neben seiner unglaublichen Stimme ein musikalisch sehr abwechslungsreiches Album an.In einem Interview zu „Gold Shadow“, welches ich in der Zeitschrift „eclipsed“ gelesen habe, erklärte Asaf Avidan, dass er sich weiterentwickelt habe. Er habe eine andere Herangehensweise für das neue Album gewählt. Er habe sich angesehen, wie es die Großen machen: Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen oder Bob Dylan. Ja, ich finde, dass man dies bei einigen der Lieder sehr wohl heraushört. Beispiele hierfür sind: „Ode To My Thalamus“, „The Labyrinth Song“ und „Fair Haired Traveller”. Hierzu erklärte Asaf Avidan in dem Interview, er keine Angst habe, das so zu machen. Ihm gefalle es sogar, dass seine Referenzen eindeutig sind und nicht mehr so verschämt daherkommen wie noch auf „Different Pulses“. Seine Stärke sei seine Stimme und seine Texte und das seine Lieder bei allen Referenzen doch vor allem nach ihm klingen. Recht hat er. „Gold Shadow“ ist im besten Sinne ganz deutlich ein Asaf Avidan Album. Neben den von mir genannten Songs möchte ich besonders auf „These Words You Want To Hear“ und „Bang Bang“ hinweisen.Fazit: Wer die anderen Alben von Asaf Avidan mochte, wird auch an „God Shadow“ seine Freude haben. Ich bin jedenfalls begeistert.

Das Album beinhaltet ein Booklet mit allen Songtexten, aber keinen Photos. Es ist schlicht gehalten und wie das Cover in schwarz/gold gestaltet. Die CD ist nicht in einer Plastikhülle, sondern aus "Pappe/Karton".Das Album hat hauptsächlich einen melancholischen, manchmal dramatischen Touch. Durch die Stimme und Interpretation von Asaf Avidan ist es sehr emotional. Die Musik ist eher ruhig und hat schöne Arrangements.Die CD bringt einen nicht in Feierlaune. Sie kann einen gefühlsmässig etwas "deprimieren", wenn man es zulässt. Die Lieder haben durchgängig schöne/einprägsame Melodien.Manche Songs sind etwas schneller und man kann sich durchaus dazu bewegen.Inspiriert durch eine Trennung, verarbeitet er seine Gefühle in diesem Album. Diese Gefühle kommen bei mir an und machen die Musik auch so authentisch und emotional für mich.Der Stil bewegt sich zwischen Pop/Folk/Blues...erinnert mich stellenweise sogar ein wenig an Varieté-Musik.Nicht jeder Song hat mich angesprochen, daher vier Sterne. Insgesamt aber ein gelungenes und ergreifendes Album.Anspieltips: Over my Head, Ode to my Thalamus, My Tunnels are long and dark these Days, Gold Shadow, Let's just call it Fate, These Words you want to hear, A Part of this, Bang Bang, The Labyrinth Song
