It sounds religious, it’s not.
Although the title does sound like there might be some Bible preaching, there is not, although the book has a spiritual theme. I really really enjoyed reading this one!

I want to be Hennie Comfort when I grow up.
Hennie is a woman who has experienced great suffering and great joy and this book is about the stories she has to tell. They're not always happy, but there's a reason she's telling them and it's mostly to help teach everyone around her how to live a fuller life. The time period is also interesting as it happens during the Civil War and then into the 1920's. What a time in history to have lived through. The language is gorgeous and reminds me of my Grandma. I had to chuckle many times as I read, thinking...these words are what I grew up listening to and food that is mentioned is food that I have eaten. And the things they are doing....are things that I know or know of. Hennie Comfort could have easily been my Great-Great Grandma and it makes me nostalgic to think of her life.I love the relationships she has with her neighbors. She takes a new-comer under her wings and helps teach her how to live in an alien enironment. I am from the rocky mountains and felt a kinship with her as she imparted her hard-earned wisdom of how to live at higher altitudes. I am also a quilter and so found the quilting in the book to be a joy. This is a story of women. The only reason I am giving it 4 stars is I felt the ending was a bit silly. But not enough so that I wouldn't recommend it to others.

This book has it all
A complicated plot line skillfully interwoven. Deep characters wonderfully developed. Unforeseen twists and a perfect ending. I noticed that some reviews noted the slow pace and found the stories to be random so they gave up without finishing. However, each story has clues which point to some of the twists revealed later. This is one of the few books I’ve hung onto for rereading. I’ve passed it on to several friends and they all loved it.

Love this story! PS: Not religious
Love this book! Ended up buying the Audible version, too, and I love the storytellers' voices. I live in Summit/Park County Colorado, so the local history elements were really fun for me. Great story, well-written, highly recommend for anyone who loves historical fiction!Oh, and I was hesitant about the subject when my book club chose it, thinking it may be religious in some way, but it's actually a really sweet part of the book "Prayers for Sale". :-)

History/Quilting
This was a very interesting book not only because I am a quilter but it told a lovely story. The main characters Hennie and Nit become fast friends. Hennie is 86 and Nit is very young and a new member to the Swan community. Based at a dregding camp in Colorado things could not be more rural and basic. Hard working men who risk their lives daily on the dredge come home to equally hard working homemakers. Hennie befriends the newcomer Nit and the two become instant friends bound together by their love of quilts. While sharing quilting time Hennie share her life stories with Nit. Nit has found a mother figure and friend who makes living in such dire circumstances bearable.Hennie's stories span the 70 years of her life on the Swan and some events before she got there. Her one secret awaits to be shared before Hennie leaves her home. Who does she tell? Nit.I really enjoyed this book and its tales and I especially loved the depiction of the the quilting bonds shared by the woman/quilters.I intend to recommend this book to my quilting buddies and anyone who enjoys a good stor.

A Story of Stories
This novel is told in the form of stories of peoples' lives, narrated by Hennie Comfort, and 86 year old widow in Middle Swan, CO, a minining town. The stories take place from the late 19th century to halfway through the Depression. Life is hard, people are poor, opportunities for education and advancement nearly non-existent. Hennie tells her stories to Nit Spindle, a teenage wife who has just last her baby, and to other members of her quilting circle of friends. The stories are of people Hennie has known, their lives, and about her own life. Tragedy is common, but so is humor and a strong affirmation of life. The women may have their differences, but when someone needs help, they all pitch in to help. This generosity of spirit is what hooked me. Hennie is a complex character, and so is Nit....as are the other characters in Middle Swan. This is a book I will recommend to my friends.

Who would need to buy a prayer? If your prayer is 'name me a great yarn' then this book is your answer.
What can I tell you that hasn't already been written in a review?I'm a guy. I bought the book on the basis of the title. Why were prayers for sale? Who would sell prayers? Who would buy a prayer? These questions are answered in the course of a great yarn about women's lives in the high mountain mining camps of Colorado in the 1800's and early 1900's. It is filled with those wonderful little details that bring a good story up to an enchanting level. It is my favorite recommendation to people who ask what I've read recently and recommend ... even though I first read it 4 or 5 years ago. It is worth a credit on Audible or whatever they're charging on Kindle or at your local independent bookstore or public library. (I paid for my copies (2) and I have no connection with anybody related to this book.)

PRAYERS FOR SALE
Hennie, the older lady in this book, is facing some problems that some of us must confront sometime soon. Her daughter is insisting that she move to Iowa, to live with her family. Hennie knows that she needs to do that, to keep her daughter from worrying about her being alone in a Colorado mining camp during the winter; but Hennie loves living in the mountains. She has lived there for 50 years; and the thought of leaving her home is distressing.Nit is sixteen, and has just moved to Colorado from Kentucky. Hennie realizes that it will be a difficult transition for Nit; so she befriends her, and tells her stories about local people and events, so that Nit may better understand the people. This book is very well-written, with interesting character-development. I especially enjoyed the surprises, since I hadn't anticipated them at all. It's the only book I've ever read three times in one summer. I'm eager to give copies to some of my friends.
