The Split History of the American Revolution: A Perspectives Flip Book

I bought this for my 5th graders, but I don't think they'd make it through any more than I did, if that!
I made it to page 12 of the first half of the book that I chose to read. It's terrible!* Who is the target audience? The sentences are short like it's written for middle school, perhaps? But the language used is more like high school. Things aren't well explained. I find that, as an adult, I'm really bored because it reads like a textbook. This person did this thing on this day and then this happened....blah, blah, blah. Who would read this?* There are missing commas after the transitions, which makes some sentences difficult to understand. Take p. 4 of the "American" section, "That night enraged protesters burned a straw effigy..."* Why are the Colonists called "Americans" before America existed?I'm giving it two stars because I haven't yet finished it (if I CAN), but the pictures lend a lot to the story, and it does have some useful facts.I will attempt to read the rest and change my review if I think it necessary.

I LOVE this book
I LOVE this book!!!! This has been a fantastic book to use as a textbook for my middle schoolers. I love it because it's concise, well worded, and gives both main perspectives to the American Revolution, which teaching middle school students to see more than one perspective is incredibly important. I'm so thankful for this book! I've learned a ton and my students are enjoying it. I can't wait to use the other books in this series.

Great, engaging book
I used this book for a thematic unit of lessons I wrote about the American Revolution for fifth grade. I liked it so much that I ordered it for my nine-year-old nephew who is a history buff. I love the creative way that the book shows the perspectives of both the Loyalists and the Patriots in a two-part flip book format. The book presents the information in an engaging way and I think my nephew will really enjoy it, as well.

Great idea!
Great idea-especially considering point of view standards. However, the material was a little deeper than my 4th graders were ready to dive into this subject. Perfect for middle/high school classrooms, I would think.

My 9 year old daughter loves this book
My daughter is intrigued by hearing the same story from two distinct perspectives. She has read this book a few times already and likes to talk about the different points of view. This format is stimulating for the young mind.

Great for teaching perspective
In my 5th grade class we learn about the American Revolution but I find it hard to get the students to relate to the British perspective. This book is short, gives students a chance to see the war from both sides and has nice pictures to go along with all the information in the text. Great book for any history buff.

This is an excellent text for fifth grade students.
I was impressed with the accuracy of the text. The book is obviously well researched without becoming overly detailed for fifth graders. My unit on the revolution focuses on different perspectives during the war so I was thrilled when I found this book. The students get a well rounded impression of both sides. I would recommend this book to anyone teaching the American revolution. Enjoy!
