Lots of scholarly essays in understandable English, unlike some other books on this subjects that are out there, which are also more limited in their selection of objects.Photos are also better than average.It's based on a museum show at the Met, so the selection of objects is biased against terracotta and ceramic items.

Comprehensive, cutting-edge illustrated account of the impact of south asian culture on southeast asia, region by region, from the 2nd-9th centuries CE (with a few glances beyond) drawing on archeology, art history, textual histories and travel accounts of the time (including Chinese sources), from some of the top scholars in these specialties, beautifully presented and accessible. While there are numerous studies of Indian, Chinese, etc. history and religion, the ancient history of southeast asia has received much less attention, and its details remain murky, even to scholars of Hinduism and Buddhism. This book goes a long way toward rectifying that.

A wonderful pictorial record of an exhibition of beautiful Hindu-Buddist sculpture that was recently shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The images are accompanied by text that enhances one's understanding of not only the art, but also the period and locations in which it was created. This volume is a welcome addition to my collection of art books.

This is a wonderful book for study of both the dispersion of Indian sculptural styles across Southeast Asia and its localisation as it was embraced by local ruling structures. Southeast Asia was home to some of the most beautiful and refined Buddhist and Hindu art and the book also is beautifully photographed and evocative. A must have in this field.

This is a gorgeous book from a visual standpoint, but also a scholarly book for those wishing details of this magnificent area of art. It’s a wonderful book for both collectors and students of Asian art.

I just find this whole study fascinating and the book is a great complement to the showat the met, which was so amazing I went twice and didnt go a third time only causemy visit was over! beautifully done. words fail.
