Computational Ocean Acoustics (Modern Acoustics and Signal Processing)

Fantastic compilation. Lacking problem solutions for self-learners.
I purchased this book based on the statement, "It includes problems and solutions in every chapter, making the book more useful in teaching (the first edition had a separate solutions manual).". As a self-learner, working through hard problems with the ability to check actual solutions is absolutely critical. Based on the previous statement, it seemed this book provided that option. While there are problems at the end of every chapter, there are no solutions. So, at best I can say it is a tremendous compilation of information, but I cannot recommend it as a good self-learning option.

Comprehensive text on Ocean ACS
An indispensable reference for ocean acoustics. Different computational methods and fundamentals are discussed. I'm new to the field, but I keep referring back to this book for what I know will be a great explanation of what I want to learn. Highly recommend.I would suggest you look for the course taught by Schmidt at MIT ... google "computational ocean acoustics MIT OpenCourseWare" - There are tons of notes, examples, and code for your free use. You can download all of the course materials as a reference, which are a great companion to this book.

This edition looks like a useful version of the first edition which contains many useful discussions of acoustic propagation in the oceamn.

Easy to read. Extremely useful.
Every chapter ends with a code "recipe."The book is worth it for them alone.Excellent explanation of the approximations involved in each derivation, and up to date for current research. My favorite underwater acoustics book.

I have a bias towards this book for several reasons (authorship isn't one of them), but from an unbiased viewpoint it is one of the best and most readable books in the field of underwater acoustics and modelling.

3 star review because this is gold mixed with some really poor publishing choices
This book is basically like a digest and cookbook for key types of underwater acoustic model; parabolic, normal modes, ray trace, fast field etc. Each section corresponds to a model type; provides an overview of it's underlying theory and then finishes up with basic 'recipes' for ways that model can be represented in computational code.Chapters:1- Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics2- Wave Propagation Theory3- Ray methods4- Wavenumber integration techs5- Normal modes6 - Parabolic equation7- Finite differences and elements8 - Broadband modelling9 - Ambient noise10 - Signals in noiseTHE ISSUESNow, there is a lot of good stuff in this book *but* like many others it fails to give a digestible and comprehensive overview of underwater acoustics. Lurton's "Introduction to Underwater Acoustics" is still the best for this. So like many unfortunate (and now penniless!) acousticians you'll find yourself needing to buy at least another 2-3 textbooks to get a complete view.Infuriatingly symbols are often not defined, big jumps are taken in the equation derivations, commentary doesn't always line up with equations... basically it looks like it's been done in a hurry and not proofread to make sure it can actually be used. The print publishing quality of the book isn't fantastic either with pages often looking at risk of becoming detached.THE REAL GOLDThe computer representation recipes at the end of each section are the real gold of this - in fact the whole rest of the book could be done away with and those could be sold on their own. If you want to challenge your programming and modelling this gives a clearer blueprint than anything else I've seen on how to actually build a mathematically-derived acoustic model in a computer. Definitions are not tied to any programming language, more it highlights what you have to do, how it might be done and what issues you should avoid/worry about.
