DK Art School: An Introduction to Art Techniques (DK Art School)

I use it all the time for reminders or information about the use techniques of various media
I have been using this book for several years and keep going back at it.I like its information about the ways to use different materials and art media. I found a lack of information about the techniques of using oil pastel. While I presume that it is not a book of instruction of how to produce a piece of art work I found a lack of some potentially useful methods of starting a painting such as when using oil or acrylic: When the background has to be very dark should it be set first and then painted over with the main subject or should it be filled carefully after the main subject has been painted? and such like pointers that could be useful to the beginner or amateur artist. On the whole I truly like this book and have recommended it to friends.

DK Art School: An Introduction to Art Techniques is a wonderful book, full of info and instruction!
DK Art School: An Introduction to Art Techniques is a beautifully printed and arranged art course manual full of ample and detailed gorgeous photos and illustrations. The instructions and additional information for each technique covered (and there are many) are systematic, easy to follow, and loaded with extra tips. I bought this book for my home schooled teenage daughter, and I've already learned quite a bit myself just reading through sections of it. We can't wait to build it into an art course for her! We got the book at a great amazon.com price, and can't believe the amazing value for the money.

Teacher Recommended
My teenage daughter goes to an online private school and as you might imagine trying to take an art class online can be a little tricky. One of the books the teach recommends is this one. I was lucky to get it for my daughter here on Amazon used for a great price, it is in great condition! It is a very large book that includes and introduction to many mediums of art, it is many volumes in one book making it great for beginners!

Amazing Book
You name it, it seems to be in this book. Beginning artists should take a look. If you've read through the whole thing, then I guess the only thing left to do is try some of the things that are in the book! And it seems it would provide a good enough base of knowledge from which one could expand his or her capabilities. It is worth returning to for refresher info as well.Wonderful colored photos, as one would expect from a DK book. I'll keep this one on my shelf for quite some time.

Very good book about different art styles.
I bought this for my 10 year old son. He likes the book. He shows different types of art that he is also interested in and if he wants a more info we can get a book on that subject.Even though it was used it was still in good condition.

An Introduction to Art Techniques
I was familiar with this excellent book from an art class and wanted a copy for my library. It is a through introduction to various art techniques.I was disappointed however in the page quality. I ordered the hard cover edition, expecting the hard finish paper of the original edition (something that would stand up to repeated handling). Instead, the paper is what you find in a paper back pamphlet. Discouraging! A lesson about declining standards in the book publishing industry.

This is a very clearly written book with great illustrations. They are attempting to cover a bit too much material in one book so the depth of explanation is limited. It does however give a great overview of the different painting techniques. It is a great book for beginners.

Excellent intro with loads of useful advice
"Introduction to Art Technique (Dk Art School)" is part of a substantive Art series that also features single subject tutorial titles including those on oil painting, pastels and watercolours plus mainstream subjects such as portraits and landscapes. The book is directed at current 'artists' of any level of experience but it is not for the absolute beginner. The book's 480 pages are extensively illustrated as is DK's norm. While it may not cover every conceivable topic, it covers considerable ground and is sufficiently comprehensive although it is still very much an introduction. It starts with drawing techniques and progresses to the choice of materials, brushes and other tools and then to individual techniques relevant to one of its major topics of watercolour, oils etc. It also offers limited but still valuable advice about collage, printmaking, framing and other options. It was hoped that it may help resolve some of the 'Mum, I'm bored' occasions likely to arise during imminent long school holidays (as at early July), not as a personal need but on behalf of a close friend; it is not of that level. The book is not expressly for the younger reader but for all ages and may be too advanced for the youngest for whom there may be good age-relevant alternatives. The book is not a complete study guide but is a usefully broad introduction across several levels and with sufficient information for each low-level topic covered within each Chapter. It could expand upon but not replace classes taken at school, possibly including those at adult education or lower level summer schools etc which may be more about getting paint onto paper or canvas than how. The contents are not written by a single author but several with the relevant real-world and teaching experience to advise. Although originally published in 1996 and a little old, the techniques, equipment and materials have changed little over time and the book is still quite fresh and valuable. Although a US publication, the major writers are all UK-based of whom one, Ray Smith, has written several art tutorial titles.Probably ideal for those with some prior practical art experience but wishing to progress. It is easy to read and, with many individual topics covered, could be read as and how you wish and in any sequence and whenever needed.
