Join Elizabeth McGovern as she takes an in-depth look at the young American heiresses whose real life stories inspired the acclaimed TV drama Downton Abbey. From the late 1800s, to the 20th century, when a new kind of American Princess wields power not through wealth, but through character, style, and wit. Through the decades, these women bring dramatic change to the European aristocracy and eventually the world.

Loved It!
I loved this series, which talked about many women during the Gilded Age who married into the nobility of Europe's old rich aristocratic families. Was disappointed to find out that there were only two seasons consisting of 7 episodes. They need to bring this series back into circulation so we can find out about the remaining over 150 women from America who went to Europe with their wealth, wit, and wisdom.

Learned some history as a result of watching
I enjoyed watching these shows on the Smithsonian Channel and really glad to see they are now available on BluRay. I watched the show originally as a fan of "Downton Abbey" and learned some history as a result of watching. Since moving to Europe last year, I especially appreciate sellers who will ship to APO addresses. Not all sellers will.

Recommended
I found the Matryoshka doll format of beginning with one woman's story and then neatly folding several other women who followed in her footsteps into it a wonderful way of framing the lives of these rich women. The only drawback for me was those stories would suddenly get very dark, and I had hoped to share this DVD with my niece but feel it really isn't suitable for under 14s. Otherwise its great biographical fluff!

disappointed. Right region
Ordered this for my mother in England from amazon uk. It is not the right region so she cannot play it. The region was not mentioned in the description. Very diappointed.

The interviews were fine as they dropped the loud music and the interviewees ...
This is a very interesting series and I would have given it five stars except for the 'sound' issues. First of all the music was exceptionally loud during the feeble narration by Elizabeth McGovern. She whispered and much of what she said was completely lost. The interviews were fine as they dropped the loud music and the interviewees were firm, resonant and for the most part very animated. Other than that very annoying aspect of not hearing much of what Ms. McGovern had to say, the series offers a great deal of insight into interesting times and interesting women. Old film footage is great and the fabulous castles, palaces and country homes that are showcased make Downton Abby look pretty ordinary! Magnificent gardens, fashions and historical events of the twentieth century are also explored so all in all very very good. I hope if there are further seasons, that the producers will choose a more robust narrator OR change the booming music that should be stilled during interviews and discussion.

For Fans Of Downton Abbey
Really enjoyed this DVD. Delivered faster than expected. Did not find any issue over sound as some mention. Great series for fans of Downton Abbey. Tells the real life stories of the “Coras” who crossed the ocean in search of titles and love.

A fascinating series.
A fascinating series. So interesting to look behind the veil of these seemingly privileged lives. This must be where the saying, "Money (or titles), can't buy happiness.".The series also allows us glimpses of some amazing estates, and has some great historical news and film clips of the various periods to flesh out the stories.
