A pleasant surprise
I was really surprised when I saw the quality of this rigger. I've been looking for one of these for a long time. I couldn't pass this up when I saw the price. First off it is well built and heavy duty. Every blade opens with a secure and stable lock in place. Initially, they are rather firm to open; but that's okay and I don't feel they will close unexpectedly in use. The pinning is very tight and makes the lanyard loop difficult to swing; but that is also okay. All in all I am pleased with the knife. I should add that the lanyard loop is also the locking mechanism for the marlin spike. And, if you want something expensive, fine, go for it. This works fine for my purpose.Update: Some reviewers suggested that this knife is a knockoff of the real Davis knife. I can testify to the fact that it is not. The picture shows a sailboat on the side panel that is not present on the actual knife received. Because of that I decided to order a knife directly from Davis to do a comparison. The knife I received from them is identical to the one sold by Amazon. I did not bother to ask Davis if they had changed anything. So what can we expect....To answer that question you must know that the spike is definitely not tapered like the one in Amazon's picture. It would be nice if it were; and I may have to do some reshaping on a belt grinder to rectify the matter. I collect knives for their usability and, because I am neither a yachtsman nor a rigger, this particular knife is fine for my use. Whether I refine the spike is uncertain. It needs it to be fully functional for its intended purpose...but...we'll see.I have several different rigger knives that are far superior to this one; but they are also more expensive and some are nearly impossible to find such as the Ka-Bar that is out of production. Schrade-Walden is another example. Yes, I've got them and they are costly. Will likely never use them as the Davis is better suited to abuse. One more thing - the Davis is ground on one side of the edge only. That's not a bad thing except that on the one Davis sent me direct there was a rough edge with bits of metal still attached. I didn't find that a concern since I am accustomed to refining the edge on every knife I receive. But it will definitely be a consideration for folks who expect the edge to be perfect when they buy a knife. I will say that the blade will take a very sharp edge - like razor sharp. Other than that I like the knife well enough to carry it in my pocket.

Blunt out of the box, but well made and holds an edge
Others have mentioned that this is not well sharpened when opening the box. I concur. But as others have also mentioned, run it over a stone for 5 minutes, and it comes up well, and seems to hold that edge well enough. The construction is all stainless, and seems absolutely solid. The lanyard clip serves as a lock for the marlinspike but not the blade, but the blade spring is stiff enough that I don't care. Very happy with this.

An important tool for a safe sailor
A Swiss Army knife is great but this knife is specifically made for use on a sailboat.1. a very sharp knife that is good for everything from cutting line to slicing a piece of cheese for a snack2. a u-shaped tool with two uses--the interior can be used to turn stubborn shackle pins and the exterior can be used to turn deck plates (like for your water and fuel fills)3. a marlinspike that can be used to help untangle a knot, hold a place in a knot to guide a line through, or turn closed-style turnbuckles4. a flathead screwdriver head (on the end of the knife)Every sailor should carry something capable of cutting a line in an emergency. This knife as well as a pair of heavy duty wire cutters comprise my "rigging emergency" kit. I keep the wire cutters below deck (though easily accessible). If I am on deck, this knife is as well. The knife is stainless steel so it won't rust easily but I'd recommend rinsing it and hitting it with a bit of lubricating oil after it has been exposed to salt water (or a few times a year if you sail exclusively in salt water). I've had this particular knife for three and half years and it is not showing any rust and still moves freely and easily.

Good knife, misleading image.
This knife is very well made. The spike, knife blade and shackle key all have great snap and hold their positions well. The only thing I don't like is that the marlin spike is not shaped like it shows in the picture. Every marlin spike I have seen is gradually tapered. This spike is one consistent diameter three quarters of the way to the point and then ground sharply conical to the tip. Maybe this is a recent design change but it does not look like the picture provided. I am curious as to whether other owners knives are like this. I think I might have bought a different knife had this been apparent. Either change the picture to represent the actual tool or better yet, make the spike a continues taper. I still like the tool and think it is a great value for how well it is made and will function just fine for me. I just think accurate information, especially a photo, is important when buying on line.

Solid Tool
I wanted a knife to keep with my bag of paracord so that I had something available any time I was working on a project. I received this as a recommendation because of some of the books on knots that I had purchased. The inclusion of a marlin spike made the knife attractive and the price was right, so I bought it. I'm happy I did. This is a solid tool. It's well constructed and tight. While the blade doesn't lock, it has a set position that does a good job of keeping it from closing on your fingers, but since it's just a cutting implement, with no ability to poke or gouge with, that's unlikely to happen anyway. Over several months of use now it's kept a great edge and it's easy to sharpen. It's cutting my rope quite well, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Great for Film Riggers! Best tool on my rigging belt!
This little tool saves me so much time and aggravation at work! The shackle key alone is a life saver! I can't even say how many times I've had a shackle that had tighten to the point of impossible to derig, and rather than having to mess with a crescent wrench while holding onto chains, cables, etc, the shackle key works every time and doesn't ever need to be adjusted! The knot breaker is also great for lining up track and splice plates, and the knife is quality that holds its blade. All in all, this is an excellent tool for any film rigger!
