How is the Year 6 teacher getting her children to turn out amazing pieces of writing?
Asked me, the Year 5 teacher. Well this is her secret. No longer will I have to sneak into her room to take notes to inform my planning - I now have my own copy. For me, this is a 'must have'. It breaks down the aspects of non-fiction writing in clear steps, discussing and (more importantly) giving clear examples of all the language features and processes required to write a quality piece. Areas covered are: instructions, recounts, explanations, report writing, newspaper articles, persuasive essays, balanced arguments, and persuasive adverts. I am now looking into more books by Sullivan and Peat as they clearly know their stuff and how to convey that knowledge in an easily understood way. The book is expensive at over £20 but there has clearly been an extreme amount of work gone into it including the examples of each genre at the end of each section which becomes a good starting point for 'this is what I'm looking for' or to dissect in order to highlight features of the genre. So - in my view, at £20-£25, this resource is a bargain.
