Sweet Virginia!
I devoured this book on a flight from LAX to Orlando and told anyone who would listen to read it!Interesting, heartwarming stories about the way our mothers love and support us, even when we don't follow traditional paths.

Cool
This book is for music lovers. It is for mom's who help guide their children to live their dreams. Great stories.

Let Them Play
I found this book to be a gem. Ms. Grohl's interviews with Mothers of musical stars gives a very much different look at what it is that makes for a rock (or other genre) star a success. In all cases, the mothers did everything they could to assist in making their child's career choice possible. One consistent theme is that schools need to do a better job in providing programs that give children with an impulse for the arts an opportunity to express themselves. Most of the subjects of this book (not the mothers - the kids) had difficulty with schooling in general, and not because they were anything less than brilliant. They are brilliant, but not in a "conventional" sense. The one overriding theme throughout the book is that Virginia Grohl unequivocally loves her son David.

A different view
An interesting perspective. I bought this book for my sister so she could get a better perspective of her teenage sons mindset. But then I read it and realized it would be better for my nephew, to give him a better perspective of his mother's mindset. The mothers of these rock stars have some interesting stories to rell, both happy and sad, and how they got through. The stories are short easy reads. It would have been nice if they had gone more in depth, but it is what it is.

The stories brought me to tears
This was an incredible book. Sometimes books written well-known celebrity type people are "fluff"...fast reads and fun. This book was well written and a great length. It kept my interest. I felt how personal it was to Virginia. I cried in at least half the stories, tears of joy and understanding as a mother and sometimes tears of heartbreak over what people have endured. And, wow, an overarching theme in this book about how our one size fits all education system fails these musical prodigies was eye opening. I loved it and can't wait to discuss it with my book club later this month.

The challenging road for moms of talented musicians
This book goes beyond a mother’s tale of rock and roll adventures with her son. Grohl adeptly presents the obstacles and joys of being parental support for their children’s musical aspirations. I especially liked the author speaking honestly about the pressures of school expectations for creative minded children to conform to a constrictive school environment and the challenges of finding outlets for their creativity. She navigated her own situation very well with courage. The many stories about love and respect for family and friends was great to read about and very uplifting. The vignettes of fond memories of her journey with Dave woven into the book was a real delight and just what I needed in times like these.

SO GOOD!!!
I purchased this book for 2 reasons: 1) My husband and I love the Foo Fighters and 2) I have a 12 year old who wants to be a rock star. This literally was the best book ever for both of those. What I didn't expect was how well written it was. I felt like I was in the kitchen or living room of whoever's star mother Virginia was visiting. I loved the easy approach to it all and the fearlessness that these mothers showed during their childs' journey. So good - I might even read it again. It even became possible to become bigger fans of, not only Dave and the Foo Fighters but all the other stars written about in the book.

I hate liquid damage
I ordered used and I understand you are taking a chance doing that but was very disappointed when my copy of this book arrived yesterday and it had liquid stains on the outside of it, front and back. I am a librarian at an elementary school and the thing about liquid is you never know what it was and your mind always goes to the worst things possible. Something that has liquid damage should never cost as much as this did.

Love it, it appeals to all music lovers.
I love all things "Foo" so I was very happy to learn Dave's mum had wrote a book about the mothers of musicians. I pre-ordered it, so the wait was lengthy especially when my American friends got their copy earlier than this side of the world. Also, the US version has a colour cover.Anyway, I ended up taking it away on holiday with me & began reading it & read it cover to cover in a couple of days. It's very insightful, funny & sad too.Ended up buying on Audible too as Dave & Virginia read the book - bonus!

Not too interesting.
Disappointed in this book!! Really not too interesting. It is put together well, and she writes well. Each chapter is about a different rock star mum's story. I just thought it would be more to do with the rock stars. It's basically about the mums. Some are more interesting than others as it gives background to their story. I suppose it depends on whether or not you're interested in those singers. For me, I found about 4 stories worth reading. The others tend to be more 80s fame so lots of younger readers won't have a clue or won't care. Quite liked the vignette where she wrote about dave grohl. I found her quite boastful but that is typical of Americans.

The other side of fame - how your Mum sees it!
You don't need to be a Foo Fighters Fan to love this book. It is a very insightful read from a Mothers perspective and how their lives have changed or are affected when their child/ren become famous. Each chapter is an interview with a mum of a famous musician and the trials and tribulations they have encountered along the way. Between each of these chapters there is a tale from Virginia Grohl herself. It is in no way narcissistic, in fact it seems rather humble and a bit of a passion project of hers. It was a great read and a real eye opener. I didn't necessarily know who all the musicians were whose Mum's were featured int he book but it was still a great read.

Want to know how it really was back stage?
An excellent peep behind the curtains into the background of some of the biggest names in contemporary music, from the perspective of their Mums'. But this is not an, ah, isn't that sweet, multi-biog. It is rather a fascinating insight. Well worth reading.

Just shut up read it!
I just became intrigued by thing I was hearing in interviews about the book, so acquired myself a copy. People are always interested in rock history but never concentrate much on band TRUE origins, mum. Some of the back stories are horrific but give you some empathy for an artist you may have had little time for. Some parts brought me to tears but pride seems to be the reason for the book and the reason some of these women are still alive.Ready it in one sitting. As with my title, shut up and read it!
