"MUSIC IS LIKE WATER, IT NO HAVE NO COLOR." BUNNY LEE.
"Here comes the musical hitmaker from Jamaica, tall and handy, sweet like candy, hit me now!"This is just what the (60 minutes in length) package says--early Bunny Lee productions with some of the best artists in Jamaican music from the years 1968-72. The band on most of these tracks is the Bunny Lee Allstars (sic) also known as The Hippy Boys. They would later work with Lee "Scratch" Perry as the Upsetters, with Bob Marley as The Wailers, and as Bunny's Aggrovators. The sound is uniformly good across these tracks--pretty crisp and clean. Are they audiophile quality? No, but for tracks recorded (now) so long ago they sound pretty great. Probably the worst sounding track is "Death Rides A Horse", which suffers from some distortion. But for me this adds authenticity to the music--you may feel differently-to each his own. The booklet has some information on some of this music and about Lee along with quotes from several musicians who worked with Lee.There's a gamut of musical styles here--beginning with a bouncy instrumental from the Allstars, to a bluesy sounding "Smooth And Sorts" by Dave Barker, to a fine blazing "Going West" by Rico Rodriguez and Tommy McCook, to a spacey "Joe Lewis" by the Allstars. Delroy Wilson is heard on a great "Drink Wine", U Roy with the equally great "Wet Vision", Stranger Cole (a personal favorite) with "When I Get My Freedom", The Hippy Boys with "Death Rides A Horse", and a bouncy instrumental, "Daydream", by the Bunny Lee Allstars, a very cool sounding trombone/vocal instrumental, "Japanese Invasion" by Rico Rodriguez, and many other good period performances. Also here are tracks by Jimmy Wonder, Joe White (a fine vocal on "Someone To Call My Own") Roy Wilson, Winston Williams & Pat Kelly, Don Lee & Lester Sterling, Delroy Wilson & Lizzi, Bobby James & Dave Barker, and "War" by Darker Shade of Black.Musicians include the usual players you'd expect--Carlton Barrett, "Family Man" Barrett, "Reggie" Lewis, Lloyd Charmers, Gladdy Anderson, "Wire" Lindo, Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook, Rico Rodriguez, Augustus Pablo, "Sticky" Thompson, and several others. For fans of Bunny Lee and/or this era of Jamaican music this is well worth your time. Another fine release from Pressure Sounds.

Songperlen
