Surprisingly straightforward. Until...
I just had to buy this as a counter to the several recent and very worthy biographies of Von Braun who was a dreadful war criminal, whether you like it or not and, more importantly, whether he could do anything in his power to avoid it.This volume gets straight into science and weapon research. It does not point out that rocket research was due to the Treaty of Versailles banning Germany from having much in the way of artillery. The author also fails to distinguish the difference between the VI's simple Ram Jet and the Turbine Jet engine developed separately in Britain and Germany. Having said that you do get a pretty steady explanation of secret weapon development even if it is short on the appalling conditions at VW and Dora in which these weapons were made by slaves. 28,000 died at Dora and over 10,000 at VW (whose German workers were the last supporters of Hitler, long after the end of the war). But then the book gets into its stride with....er....flying saucers and...er....er....anti gravity.... Lets get Mr Fitzgerald going on the radio or sound wave weapons used on US diplomats in Cuba and China . And Zombies, please.

This was a difficult read for me due to the technical aspects of the subject. I found it well researched and interesting, but more of a reference book than I had anticipated. Michael FitzGerald includes a great deal of history and detail for weapons that were proposed, including some that were never brought to production. He taught me things I wasnt aware of, and I appreciated his thoroughness.I received my copy through NetGalley under no obligation.
