Fascinating Book
If you are interested in modernization (Westernization) in Japan in the era leading up to WW II, this is the book for you. It is lavishly illustrated and focuses on the graphic and fine arts are representative of the social change during the era. The text is academic, but very readable and enjoyable. I have been staying up too late reading this beautiful book.

If you like the 1930s
The visual content of this book fascinated me and I found it very well produced, but the individual essays did not go as deeply as the title essay by John Dower. I know a little about this subject and I think they could have contributed more, but the illustrations are wonderful.
