Life Saver
I purchased this medical alert for my 88 year old mother who lives with me. Although she has not had to "really" use it, she accidentally pushed the help button one morning, and within 8 minutes the police and ambulance was at the door - that almost scared her to death. But, I can tell you it works very well. And since she does not walk very well and thinks she has to go out and watch the garden grow, and I have to work all day this has become her favorite friend. She wears it around her neck day and night. I would recommend it for everyone, young and old.

Good product, great value, no monitoring fees
I bought this for me Mom, set it up for her, and so far it is working great. She has a 2400 sq foot 2 story house and the unit reaches not only everywhere in her house, but everywhere in her yard and garage as well.Because there is no display, programming is not quite as easy as it could be, but it really wasn't all that hard. The unit has a 9v battery to save the settings, but since I live about 7 hours away from my Mom, I also bought a small computer UPS ($35) that I plugged it into in case she forgets to change out the 9v battery, this way all my settings will be saved. We also bought a small keysafe ($22) that hangs outside so that if the unit calls her next door neighbors they can get the keys out of the keysafe to get into her house. I like the keysafe better than giving out four sets of keys to different people. All in all, the almost perfect product at a great price, and no monthly monitoring fees. All that I could really ask for more would be a display on the unit to show the phone numbers.

Confusing-Does not have a real Speakerphone feature
Manual is Very small print, can be confusing, and I'm a techno geek. The communication with your loved one is the main selling point of this unit. Too bad it doesn't allow for communication in any kind of modern way. It was designed in the late 1990's and still can't offer a simple way to speak to a person who might be injured to find out what is the matter. The factory didn't help with my needs, since they are advertising a speakerphone feature and this unit only allows 15 sec. "room monitoring" and then a one way 15 sec. "speak" function that is totally confusing and not 2-way. To communicate more after the 15 sec. are up, you push a button on your phone and the unit repeats the whole outgoing message and then you get 15 sec. of room monitoring; no 2-way talk. No elderly person could figure it out enough to know when to speak to the person trying to offer appropriate help ( i.e. false alarms). For the last 20 years, "Speakerphone" has meant 2-way duplex communication. My unit had a defect- very faint speakerphone sound, although the outgoing message was very loud. The lady at the factory was rude and didn't know a switch from a volume control. Meaning: she asked me to look on the side of the unit for the volume control.....and there is no control, only a speaker on-off switch, which was already on.This product will get many returns based on this confusion. Not worth the hassle or money. Look for a more sophisticated unit with real 2-way talk feature. I don't have the name of the product, but it is more $ and probably worth it, since the monthly monitoring services are OK, but quite expensive.

How do you change the battery in the pendant?
This product does work. I know because my mother activated it by accident and was surprised when the National Guard, Fire Department and State Police arrived. It was difficult to program and my sister and I agonized over the manual when we set it up for our mother. We didn't want to to alarm the world. Well a year has gone by and a GREEN led is showing that the battery is low. GREEN means bad, RED means okay.... huh? Anyway the useless manual does not explain how to take apart the pendant to replace the 12 volt alkaline battery. It tells how to how replace the 9 volt battery backup which is incredibly obvious. I pried the unit apart just to the point of breaking it and backed off in fear of watching some spring or gizmo shoot across the room. I can see the battery lurking in the bowels of the pendant... so close yet so unreachable. Anyone have some ideas? we have a call in to the manufacturer.

Once programmed it works as described.
I am pretty techie and I remember it took some effort to program. Somehow I got it and it worked for the 4 years we used it. I didn't want it calling 911 automatically so I was glad you could turn off that feature.Pros:No monthly feeWorksCons:Hard to ProgramOverall for 2007 this was a decent product, if you are reading this past 2012 there are better products.

Finally found something that works
Been looking for years for a system that will alert me when my mother needs help. The usual medical alert system goes to some office who then asks what is the problem, etc,, etc. Mom caught on to it easy, and when she fell, she pressed the button, and I was able to reach her within a minute. As her mobility is severely limited, she doesn't go far. Tested the range, and works great outside the house as well (though not far).

Like it!
Overall, excellent safety for the money. Simple for my dad to use. As other reviews noted, the setup process is a little complicated but if you are comfortable with voice mail menus (dial the extension then press # on your phone)then you should be able to make it through OK. Follow the steps described in the directions and stick with it! Button is a little sensitive and I have gotten a couple of false alarms. This stopped when my dad started putting the pendant in his breast pocket. No problem since then. He also now knows to listen for the unit and press the off button on the pendant if there is not an emergency. Overall--really like it, would recommend, and would purchase again!
