My strongest recommendation for anyone getting a knee replacement is to GET IN THE BEST SHAPE YOU CAN BEFORE THE SURGERY
Very helpful book. My strongest recommendation for anyone getting a knee replacement is to GET IN THE BEST SHAPE YOU CAN BEFORE THE SURGERY!!! I worked out hard for several months in the gym and my recovery from the surgery was easy and fast. The hospital required me to use a walker, but when I got home, I didn't need it at all. Nor did I need a cane. I could drive in 9 days. My only regret about having both knees replaced (different times) is that I didn't do it earlier.

Great resource pre and post op for a TKR
I wish I had this book prior to my surgery and maybe I would not be experiencing some of the issues I now have. The exercises, the massage for scar tissue, and the chapter on pool therapy have been extremely helpful. I don't think these things have changed since the 2004 publication and the photos may be "outdated" as someone suggested but they get the point across which is all that counts. I have already recommended the book to 2 people I know who have up and coming TKR as I wish I had had it 10 weeks ago and not just stumbled on it's reference recently. It should be a reference given to patient by OS and PT's - and maybe they should read it as well. Having been written by a PT who experienced Bilateral TKR's it's written with knowledge as well as empathy & understanding of the procedure.

Almost perfect, and very informative - 2020 review
I've just had two total knee replacements, and wanted to know what was going to be happening. This book is written by two experts, clearly laid out, and explains in a way that curious laypersons can understand. It answered some of my questions about the rehab physical therapy I had scheduled, and what was going on during the few really busy days before and after the operation. I like to exercise, but I've learned that working through pain after an injury without understanding what was involved sometimes will slow down recovery (I'm 69 and still active). This book helps me understand what I can be doing now, and how long to expect it to take. (Up to a year for *complete* recovery.)One star off because it's copyrighted 2004, and is slightly outdated. But the knees are still the same, and the rehab largely so. Also I found no other book that presented all of this information, and in such a clear way. If you are considering partial or total knee replacements, first get in shape, but also get this book.

and am happy to say I have had a wonderful full recovery
I found this very helpful to prepare for my knee replacement surgery. It helped to explain what to expect and the importance of following the Physical Therapy exercises faithfully. I followed instructions in the book, and am happy to say I have had a wonderful full recovery. This would also be a nice gift for someone before they have their surgery. Very well done, easy to read, not full of medical jargon.

A Most Thorough and Phenomenal Book
Although written several years ago, this book is excellent. I had a TKR at one of the best hospitals in the country. I wish I had thought about looking into a book well before I had to consider surgery. This book is very thorough as to what you can do yourself prior to and after surgery. Even though you will go through physical therapy, the book offers much more detail than you will get from a physical therapist.I highly recommend this book to anyone with knee osteoarthritis.

Love that the book covers a year of rehab
Have the book a few days...already to page 72. Very down to earth recommendations....1 gal + 5 gal buckets without handles to do knee exercises. Lots of pics demonstrating knee replacement parts, anatomy, and patients demonstrating. Love that the book covers a year of rehab....most done on your own. Even though book is over 10 yrs old, lots of info is relevant to me...and takes the anxiety of TKR coming in the next year....of both knees. I highly recommend.

Much helpful information...
Got this book 2 years ago before my knee replacement. A bit outdated as far as the actual surgical procedure, but the exercises were extremely beneficial for preparing my knee for surgery and also for after I had completed my stint of physical therapy. I would HIGHLY recommend this book--the more you can strengthen your knee and thigh muscles before surgery, the more success you will have. I truly believe this. I DID THE PRE SURGURY EXERCISES LYING ON MY BED--UNABLE TO STAND ON "BAD" KNEE. I REALLY BELIEVE THE BEFORE AND AFTER EXERCISES IN THIS BOOK WERE HIGHLY BENEFICIAL TO MY SURGURY BEING AS SUCESSFUL AS IT WAS!! Of course, consult with your doctor about your personal issues, but I found this book to be extremely helpful. Knee surgery and physical therapy was a "BEAR" for me, and painful as it all was, I am glad for the information in this book!

Wish I has this book much sooner
Although this book mentions landlines, it still contains up to date information about TKA and rehabilitation.I wish I had known about this book. efore surgery. It contains the information that the OS and therapist side stepped with a " all patients heal differently" answer. Finally, I had to say that I knew there was a timeline, because they threaten people with a MUA.Thanks for sharing a bit of reality, even though I realize that everyone heals at their own pace, I appreciate knowing what is realistic.

Necessity for potential knee replacement patients
I'm finally on the waiting list for knee replacements after over 7 years of pain & 4 years of extreme pain. The book is written by experts, one of which had had both knees replaced.l, so it talks alot of sense about looking at people not as being too young for the op but how it impacts on their lives & their pain levels. It's invaluble for advice on what to prepare for, not with the operation but also importantly how you need to adapt your home for after the op, exercises, clothing, practicing with crutches beforehand & how little you'll be able to do initially after the op. There are clear photos on what exercises are best to do before the op & why & then those for after the op. The programme detailed in the book takes you through to 12 months after your op. Which is good as I'll be ready for my next one to be done. I'd say this book is a necessity for anyone having or thinking about having knee replacements.

Everying you need to know, well explained.
A very comprehensive guide to all a patient needs to know about the Total Knee Replacement operation and the rehabilitation which should follow. Well explained without too much jargon, and well illustrated with many photographs and diagrams. I have found it invaluable, and it leaves no questions unanswered. Best read before the events it describes so you are prepared, then read again during the process, to guide you through it. A good investment to help you get the best out of the TKR procedure.

Good book
Bought for my Dad after he had had a full double knee replacement in Feb 14. Although the book is American based the principles are the same and he found it very useful for tracking his progress week to week. It's now 8 weeks since his op and he is walking unaided and although still has some pain is doing great!!! He is doing a lot of walking which is more than he could do before and his scars are nearly gone! It's unusual for someone to have a double knee replacement at the same time but he needed it!

Excellent book for anyone about to undertake knee replacement surgery
Excellent book for anyone about to undertake knee replacement surgery. People who know what they are talking about as one of the authors has had a knee replacement. Written in everyday no nonsense language. I am about to have my second knee replacement and wish I had known about this book before I had the first one done. Even if you are considering buying this book post op it will be well worth it as it covers healing and therapy issues for up to a year and beyond after the operation, as well as advice and guidance before an op.

Have you had a knee replacement
Excellent condition, took about a week to arrive, so wish I had had it before the op.It is arranged chronologically, general information, surgical technique, then, day 1, day 2 etc. I think it was day 14 when it arrived. Lots of ideas for additional exercises. It did cause me a bit of concern, they recommend repeating some of the exercises far more than my physio sheet from hospital. Some of the excersises are performed on gym equipment which I don't have access to.Its a good book to dip in and out of, but I wouldn't follow it slaveishly
