Uniform volume playback level between songs/discs
American jazz trumpeter Blue Mitchell’s first 7 albums as band leader on 4 discs, all in stereo except for the first album, with excellent sounding, even volume playback levels between discs, great for making rip-to-computer CD playlists of favorite tracks. Album name, date, song title & time listed on back cover; personnel on each album listed inside – no other info. Each disc is secured by typical plastic “teeth” on the inside plastic packaging inside the tri-fold cardboard cover. Each album is complete, although missing is “Studio B”, a bonus tune on the reissue of 1959’s Out of the Blue. If interested, Windows Media Player gets almost all of each disc's encoded info wrong, so if making a playlist you'll have to edit everything manually.

One fine package by an unjustly neglected trumpeter
Blue Mitchell travelled in fast company, like his boss Horace Silver, trombonist Curtis Fuller of the Jazz Messengers, tenorman Johnny Griffin, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Art Blakey, arranger Jimmy Heath and many more. Mitchell's bright singing tone was instantly recognizable as was his harmonic ingenuity in varied settings. These seven albums are unjustly neglected gems of the era (1958-1962) and belong in every fan of hard-bop trumpet's library, side by side with Booker Little, Donald Byrd, and Freddie Hubbard.

The music is great. My only issue (which is not a big deal with me) is the track names do not line upwith the actual music. In other words, track one may come up as Blues March but Big Six is playing.

Easy to separate albums in your music library.
Man, for the price you can't go wrong with this set. To my ears the sound quality is exceptional. My only annoyance is that with multiple albums on each CD, iTunes or your favorite MP3 player, can't recognize individual albums. However, with iTunes in my case, each song was recognized, so I simply separated each album (by looking the tracks up on Google) and created individual listings for each. I also downloaded the album artwork online and now I have each album listed by itself in my iTunes music library. Super deal!

Seven Classic Albums Blue Mitchell (4 CD)

Essential Blue Mitchell.
A wonderful compilation of Blue Mitchell's Riverside period. Everything here from small groups to a classic single horn session ("Blue's Moods") to a big band date and an album with strings. All excellent and well recorded...good sound quality. Blue was one of the major trumpet stylists and was sometimes overshadowed by more flamboyant players but Blue was the essence of swing and lyricism. A great set.

strepitoso
