Let me start off by saying that I recently discovered the Destination Truth TV series and have been completely hooked. While I have not seen every episode yet, I watch as many as I can. Josh Gates is an engaging, funny, charming and daring adventure host and I should not have been as surprised as I was that he is also an outstanding author. Josh has a way with words that is very rare to find these days. From the first page, I was impressed with the clarity and descriptiveness of his writing.As I read this book, it was as if Josh was narrating directly to me in the same style as the TV series. I could hear his voice explaining his background, his hike up Kilimanjaro, his introduction to his producer and the team at SyFy, not to mention the many travel accounts found in these pages. Even if you have not seen the TV series, Josh makes his book easy to follow and a joy to read. Several times I found myself laughing out loud. But the book is not just about recounting his adventures--Josh eagerly and passionately (sometimes recklessly) steps into new cultures and you can feel that he wants his audience to do the same. Witty and moving--especially the recounting of their travels to Chernobyl towards the end of the book--I couldn't put it down. Josh wants everyone to catch the spirit of adventure that he has, at least to some degree. As he explained the difference between real travel and just being a tourist, I found myself yearning to discover places like Josh does and I'm quite sure that is one of the main goals of this book. The only TINY fault that I found was that there was not enough about Ryder in this book. She is my favorite character on the show and only got a few sentences in the book.Overall, this book is amazing. I didn't find any grammatical or formatting errors (I read the Kindle version) and I loved the pictures at the end. Two thumbs up for Josh! I hope there are more books to come as Josh continues to travel and shoot his TV series.

I really enjoyed this book. It gave a true behind the scenes look at Josh's adventures. It was funny, scary, and just GOOD!

I have long enjoyed programming featuring Josh Gates, but since I'm not an over-the-top fan, I don't jump on every product thrown out by the networks. This book, however, sounded intriguing. And for the most part, it lived up to its promise.Mr Gates's dry humor is woven through anecdotes ranging from the absurd (showing up un-showered for an interview to add authenticity) to several genuinely harrowing experiences at locations worldwide. So far, so good.Unfortunately there are moments when his privilege overtakes his writing, to its detriment. It's done with an artless throwaway quality which (I hope unintentionally) demeans countless poverty-stricken souls he meets worldwide. It isn't the entire book, but when it crops up it detracts from everything else.On the whole, this is very much worth the read. It's an engaging behind-the-scenes glimpse of how one intrepid explorer turned his curiosity into an adventure. For better or worse, I'm glad to tag along for a vicarious vacation to everywhere.

I love Josh Gates I have to say to start with - his sense of humor, wit, and intelligence are magnetic. I enjoy his personal accounts and how much he's grown over the years in his work and personal life. I hope he decides to write more in the future - he will certainly have my support. I hope he continues to bring the treasures of the unknown and all the historical importances to the masses.

This is a behind the scenes take on the popular TV show: Destination Truth on the Syfy channel (Season 5 airs in January 2012, Season 1 - 4 are on Netflix instant play). You don't have to be a fan or even know the show to enjoy the adventures told within these pages. The author is the host and has an extensive knowledge built by hands on experience. His wit, humor, and charm shine through, bringing the same charisma as he does on the show. They are stories of his travels with a realness you just can't make up, and they center on the people met, the cultural differences, and the chances taken during the exploration of snake infested jungles and ruined complexes. The most important thing anyone can glean from this book is that the fun is in the journey, not the destination.It's loaded with tips on travel and can inspire any homebody to want to get out and explore. You don't have to hop on a plane. You can take a day trip to a town, any town really, and have a mini adventure all your own. The show may have something to do with legendary critters and ghosts, but the book really gets you in the mood to get up and go. For those who can't travel for whatever reason or excuse can live vicariously through Josh and the DT crew. This book will leave you wanting to know more about our world and other cultures. It's a great look inside the people and the experience of one helluva guy. There's snark, there's personality, and a few curse words but it's all part of what makes Josh and Destination Truth that much fun. I could read this book over and over and still laugh, giggle, and face palm just as I did the first time. Read it slow. Savor it. Enjoy it. Read it again. It's well worth the money.

Loved reading Josh’s books. Sit down and let him take you on adventures with him, feel like you are truly there by his descriptiveness in every story! He makes you laugh, he makes you feel his emotions! Josh is a fantastic writer and I absolutely commend him on this book. Was so great, I had to read my husband the stories after I already read them. I love Josh!

I have followed all the expeditions of Josh, as such a great fan and the book supplements greatly the early days

Das Buch ist genauso gut wie die Serie und man kann Josh Gates Stimme förmlich beim Lesen hören. Immer wieder begeistert er mit seinem typischen Humor und man hat eigentlich immer gute Laune während des Lesens. Außerdem lernt man etwas mehr über die Produktion von DT und über Josh Gates Privatleben, was ich persönlich sehr interessant fand. Natürlich kommen einem einige Geschichten aus der Serie bekannt vor, aber da ich sie schon lange nicht mehr gesehen hatte, empfand ich das nicht als negativ. Außerdem gibt es immer zusätzliche Informationen und auch einige lustige Fotos im Buch. Ich kann es nur jedem Destination Truth (und Expedition Unknown) Fan wärmstens empfehlen.

As a fan of the T.V. show, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The drama, comedy and action kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoy every aspect of this book from the travelling to the hunt for monsters. Josh Gates is a wonderful writer, and I hope he writes more books. I highly recommend this book.

Absolut lustig zu lesen, macht definitiv Spass. Hoffe er schreibt noch mehr über seine Abenteuer. Wer Josh Gates und seinen Humor und seine Sendungen mag , wird dieses Buch lieben😉
