Psychotherapy and Spirit: Theory and Practice in Transpersonal Psychotherapy (Philosophy of Psychology (Dis))

Somewhat superficial
The focus was strongly Western, with some comments about Eastern paradigms, at times, explained with a partial understanding of them. Forms of spirituality from South American, African, Australian, Indigenous paradigms were barely mentioned. It is understood that Transpersonal Psychology is a Western concept, yet, the concept of "spirit" is more expansive, and should be more inclusive and pluricultural.

Purchased for grad school essay, kept for excellent content.
I did not have high hopes for this book. I purchased it to be able to write a grad school essay for Naropa University. Although I ended up not applying to that school, I decided to keep this book because of the excellent content. I would recommend this book to anyone entering or already in a helping field of work.

A shopping list of possibilities
Aside from gaining an understanding of transpersonal as a concept and being apprised of different contrasting approaches, there really isn't anything coherent you can take away with you. But perhaps that's all the author intended.

A Great Introduction to Transersonal Psychology
I had not heard of Cortright prior to taking a class in Transpersonal Psychology which uses this as a textbook, but the book is thorough, readable and well-organized.

A very fine introduction
I read this book in 1998 and have returned to from time to time. Clearly written quite informative for new and not new clinicians. Highly recommended as an introduction to transpersonal psychology and psychotherapy.

An early work on the topic and still one of the best.
I read this about 20 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised to see it today while browsing. It was one of the first books I found that created a fantastic melding of spiritual practice and the practice of therapy.

Informative
Helpful book. Gives a concrete definition of transpersonal psychology. Reviews every many theories in transpersonal psychology giving the limitations and positives of each theory. Goes into detail on many ideas such as altered states of consciousness and spiritual emergency. Written clearly and broken down simply, but uses a transpersonal psychology vernacular.

Brilliant overview of the subject
I was really impressed with this book. Being new to transpersonal psychology this was exactly what I needed. The author gives a great overview of the whole spectrum of thought in the area, giving both the pros and cons to each theory/approach and asking very pertinent questions. The book deals with a whole range of thought in a very solid and grounded way - something I thought was really important considering the subject matter. A fairly slim-ish book - concise and a good springboard to delve into areas that have grabbed your interest.

very highly recommended
This book manages to explore the different spiritual and psychological material and traditions with amazing clarity, intelligence and insight. It put into words many of my own feelings about some of the psychological therapies i have experienced and studied, their merits and de-merits, and the same goes for spiritual practices and traditions. It manages to be both realistic and inspiring in its approach.
