This instrument is truly remarkable!!!
This aluminum instrument is amazing and is under defined and is much much more then as presented. I love it! It plays 3 octaves with little effort. It surprises me and is better than my many thousands of dollars root bamboo made shakuhachis. Easier to player and sounds truly amazing. It is near indestructible and is ground breaking. A true professional level instrument. I am only a buyer and have no reason but to share my own impressions and experience. One issue. The utaguchi (mouthpiece) was unfinished. It was a little rough. I had to use 600 grit sandpaper just a tad to level the inside and then 0000 steelwool to finish and polish. I then used the same steelwool to polish outside of mouthpiece to finish and polish holes smooth - not much just a little. It now plays truly remarkable!!! It is a great buy. I am so glad I purchased ☺️ thank you!

Great modern shakuhachi!
Super well in tune, much easier to control than a bamboo flute, more control over the dynamics. I can reach the third register without even taking my thumb off the back hole. Lots of easy control over meri notes. For playing regular notes, it sounds very similar to a Jiari flute. It is a bit harder to get windy effects such as muraiki, but if you're looking to play very in tune very easily, this is a great option.

Positive beginner’s impressions
I don’t expect to be qualified to judge nuances any time soon, so here are a beginner’s impressions for whatever they are worth…- The shakuhachi is a comfortable weight and consistent with the description per my scale, around 11 ounces. This is quite a bit lighter than weight listed for the popular plastic beginner’s option.- Aesthetics are simple and unembellished. I prefer this to synthetic material trying to look like bamboo.- It is rough around the edges, literally. The mouthpiece has uncomfortably sharp corners, and even the fingerholes feel noticeably sharp. Ends look like they were sawed with little or no finishing.- Fortunately, comfort issues are readily fixable. Based on the report of another reviewer (who has my thanks), I slightly rounded the edges of the mouthpiece (other than blowing edge) and (very slightly) fingerholes with good effect using 0000 steel wool. I am happy with the result, and it took about 30 minutes or less with a cost of around $10 (only because I could only purchase the steel wool locally in a pack of 12).- I can’t speak to the nuances of sound quality and playing experience, but the basic tones of the minor pentatonic scale are precisely in tune per my electronic tuner, even with warbly beginner’s playing.- A fabric sleeve and cleaning cloth with a string to pull it through the bore are included.Given the low price, good sound fidelity so far as I can assess so far, clean aesthetics, and rough edges, I would give this a 4.5 star rating if possible, but as is I give it 5 since the comfort/finish issues are easy enough to fix.

Very worth the money
Agreeing with a previous reviewer, if you gently sand the interior, this flute makes a beautiful tone. One other note to add, the headpiece is a separate part, and it's glued on. I live in a humid environment and it fell off during cleaning. It doesn't harm the tone or even put it out of tune, but it was shocking. I didn't even glue it back on as there's no real need, I just make sure it's straightened when I play.

Terribly out of tune.
This was terribly out of tune. I compared it both to an instrument tuner and another flute I own and was very disappointed. Returned.
