From Publishers Weekly In a tone that's delightfully sassy, Malkin, a resident of Brooklyn, N.Y., describes her escapades with feral cats beginning when Flaca wanders into her backyard. After Flaca leaves for parts unknown, a hungry mother cat with four kittens arrives. Malkin, already an owner of two cats, and her not-so-cat-friendly husband, Jason, do not attempt to domesticate the strays, but find themselves naming, feeding and bonding with them. This leads to several unavailing attempts to find new owners for the kittens. She and Jason then employ the TNR (trap, neuter, return) strategy, which aims to control the feral population in the immediate area. The strategy not only aids the cat population, but protects Malkin's reputation as the "crazy cat lady." Malkin's background as a magazine journalist serves her well as she relates humorous anecdotes: building the cat shelter in their basement, watching the kittens' antics during a snowstorm and surviving a raccoon invader. Malkin interjects useful information on cat care and cat behavior along with her story, and only occasionally does she show her "crazy cat lady" side with overly feline-infatuated prose. This sprightly tale will please cat lovers everywhere, and maybe even convert a few dog lovers along the way. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The author is a wonderful writer and the first part of the book is perfection. However, her callous attitude towards certain cats that came along is very disturbing. Real TNT people spay and neuter everyone and would never deny mercy euthanasias to suffering cats just because they "don't like them." Very disappointing attitude to be touted in what otherwise would have been a magical book.

A New Yorker's Hilarious Introduction to TNR
Although a fun read, (a lot of it was read aloud to DH) it is not without its heartbreaks. The reader learns about the hardscrabble life of feral cats and TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). By the end, you will know everything you need to know about TNR. This is my second copy--gave the first away to a friend dealing with feral cats. Highly recommend

A Lot for Your Money
Here is a witty, intelligent and poignant story that is similar to those played out across the world - what to do with your homeless cats? The author takes us down the road with her as she becomes more and more deeply entangled in a web of heartache and joy, courtesy of the urban cats she befriends and ultimately takes responsibility for. It is a story for anyone who loves cats, but it is especially valuable for those of us who find ourselves in the same situation. It is full of humor, small and large disasters, and much information on her experience with TNR (Which she sometimes calls "Trick, Neuter, Return"). I wish I had had this book in the early nineties when I was in the quagmire. Buy it - read it - be thankful for it!

Informative, entertaining and heart warming
I enjoyed this book more than I had expected. It was not only a delight to read, but informative as well. Being a cat lover and having adopted my share of "outside cats", I certainly could relate to the author's experiences. I read parts of the book to my husband who agreed that she captured the essence of many of our own experiences. If you are a cat lover or interested in animal welfare, you will find this a worthwhile and quick read.
