Torpedoes in the Gulf: Galveston and the U-Boats, 1942-1943 (Volume 40) (Williams-Ford Texas A&M University Military History Series)

Growing up in Galveston during WW2 I was acutely aware of the facts as told in this book Most people do not know how close we came to having the war on our shores. Remembering the days of blackout at night on the island.

Purchased as a gift but my short review of the book prior to giving it as a gift was very favorable. It appears to cover a little known part of World War II very well and in an interesting and engaging way.

I came across this title as I was researching the German navy in WWII. I'd stayed away from U-Boat books and focused on the surface elements, but since I teach WWII in the western hemisphere I thought I'd check it out. I also felt that I knew a lot about the US home front. This book was an eyeopener and introduced me to many new areas to research: the building of an oil pipeline from the gulf to New York, code breaking, the best hunting areas in the gulf, sinking of latin American ships, problems with German torpedoes, anti-German feelings in the US prior to its entry into the war, blackouts, civil defense, coast artillery operations near Galveston, US Navy Armed Guard. Melanie Wiggins' writing style kept me interested throughout the book.

GREAT read!! After reading this great book, I understand now the huge old abandoned Navy WW II blimp hangers I saw near Galveston years ago. I was on the C & C Technologies sonar vessel when U-166 was discovered during a debri survey for a pipeline. It lay on its side in 5,500 feet near the mouth of the Mississippi Delta.The number of U-boats off Texas, Louisiana and Florida and their successes in the sinking of our vessels in the Gulf of Mexico was sobering. No one I talked to about this amazing book and its research were aware of enemy vessels so close to our shores.

Very well written about a chunk of WW2 history I knew absolutely nothing about. Very interesting book.

You will learn somethings about German subs operating in US waters that you didn't know before. Very easy and interesting reading...and I'm not a reader.

This is really well written. True story of German U-Boats in the Gulf of Mexico. Hard to believe that they were so close. I actually read this book 20+ yrs ago and bought this one for a Christmas present to my son.

If you have any interest at all in WWII, or even the history of Texas, you should get this book. Growing up as a Baby Boomer, I thought I knew a lot about war activities in the Gulf of Mexico, but I really had no idea of the large scale of the submarine battles in the Gulf. Loved the book, just wish it was a LITTLE better organized. Seems to repeat some of the same stories at different parts of the book.

Still reading this book , a daring and also stupid action ,to go into the backyard of USA with such small U boats,coming all the way across the Atlantic,almost a bit like a suicide mission .......
