The illustrations are missing
Great book. But kindle customers should know NONE of the illustrations included appear in the kindle edition. Very disappointing.

A great introduction to the original Anne Lister
A very easy, agreeable read. I’ve studied Anne Lister since I saw the movie “Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister” starring Maxine Peake. I also have watched all “Gentleman Jack” episodes on HBO. This is a natural and thorough go-to to learn more about this very pre-Victorian, pre-modern and super interesting woman.

Anne Lister was ahead of her time
I first heard about Anne Lister 40 years ago in a short blurb in a book. I was intrigued. More people are now familiar with Anne Lister after the BBC/HBO series, Gentleman Jack. This is one of the books used as the basis for the series. It provides an introduction to Lister, and her life, through her journals. The lives, experiences, and complexities of women are too often lost to history. Because of the journals we are given an intimate look into the life and times of this remarkable woman. Lister is fascinating & Liddington’s book provides an excellent introduction.

AL is very verbose
Although AL is very verbose, I truly enjoyed her book and Jill Liddington' s interpretation. What I didn't like we're the narrator's. Unfortunately their voices were too feminine for the likes of such a strong and independent woman like AL.

Thank you for including temps and times
The clear picture of life in Halifax countryside the weather and the family relationships. Your books show a clear picture of life as a butch lesbian. Life as person in between the sexes and simply tolerated loved and allowed to exist in the world. Well done. Worst part is it ended too soon.

Fascinating reading
I found this book very easy to read especially with the notes provided. Any little confusion on my part, taken care of by notes, paragraph usage and brackets!😁

In-depth review of Lister's diaries, from a narrow slice of time.
Liddington carefully looks at the patterns of behavior--sexual, economic, and social--of Anne Lister and shows us a complex woman of her time who also threw off many of its social norms.

A Must Have for Anne Lister fans
If you're fascinated by Anne Lister, then this book is a must have. Jill Liddington has spent years working on Anne Lister's secret diaries and provides fascinating insight into Lister and the world in which she lived. This is a wonderful addition to Helena Whitbreads works.

Another very good account of a part of the life of a formidable woman
I first came across Anne Lister in 1988 in Helena Whitbread’s ‘I know my own heart. There, the diaries covered the years 1817 to1824. I have enjoyed Jill Liddington’s books on woman suffrage, and thus was drawn to ‘Nature’s Domain which covers the year 1832. (I missed it in 2003.) Jill Liddington wrote in 1998 (in ‘Female Fortune’) on the period 1833 to 1836.Jill Liddington sets Anne Lister’s diaries against the backdrop of her running of the Shibden estate and of the politics of the day - and does so with considerable skill. 1832 was the year Anne Lister’s hopes of a partnership at Hastings were dashed, and she returned to Shibden, and a sister with whom she was at odds. The book brings out the strength of Anne Lister’s character and determination. She improved the estate, was a domineering figure in local politics, and met a neighbouring heiress Ann Walker. Miss Walker was to become Anne Lister’s latest acquisition.I look forward to returning to an earlier phase in Anne Lister’s life, having bought Helena Whitbread’s ‘No Priest but Love’ which deals with the years 1824 to 1826.
