Believe It! Or Not:
For some time now I've had my eye on "Bill O'Reilly's Legends and Lies" series so when Amazon offered this Kindle edition of "The Real West" at a greatly reduced price I jumped at the chance. Basically "The Real West" is a compilation of brief biographical essays of several historical figures, the famous and the infamous, written by journalist and author of several best sellers, David Fisher. The series editor Bill O'Reilly is on hand to write the Introduction. The "Legends and Lies" series are companion books for the Fox News TV series of documentaries on history. On the surface it looks like a good read for anyone interested in Western History with articles on the likes of Davey Crockett, Wild Bill Hickok and Annie Oakley, with a few bad guys like Black Bart and Jesse James added to spice things up, but for me, it was kinda of a mixed bag. Although this is a quick easy read, and, while I enjoyed some of the essays, others seemed a bit too sensational for my taste. Also throughout the book there were some details that I thought were a bit questionable, to say the least. The segment on Bass Reeves was new to me and he is someone I may have to look into a little deeper. But as for him being the "real" Lone Ranger, well that's quite a stretch given that is no evidence whatsoever that George W. Trendle based his "fictional" character on any one "historical" figure. Rather, he envisioned The Lone Ranger as being more like the "fictional" Zorro or Robin Hood. Be that as it may, I thought Fisher pushed that point a little to far. Like any collection of essays some were more interesting than others, but all were readable. Fishers writing is fast paced and, at times, exciting. In spite of some of those draw backs, I added "The Real West" to my collection, the price was right. As for the rest of the series however, I doubt if I'll be reading any of the other entries. But if this book tweaks your interest then, by all means, check it out yourself. Who knows, you may even find it to your liking. I had no downloading or formatting problems with this Kindle edition.Last Ranger

Very good book!
I bought this book for my husband. He doesn’t enjoy reading and usually reads about 1 book every 2 years (yes, I don’t get it either) He’s very interested in the “old west” and recently read a book my brother gifted him. It was from Bill O’Reilleys Killing Crazy Horse; he loved it and was impressed at its accuracy. Went out on a limb and bought him this book. He loves it! Now when I like to sit and read he doesn’t complain, but reads with me! I will continue to purchase from Bill O’Reilly’s 2 series. Good way to get a non-reader to enjoy reading!

Pretty interesting hearing details about Bass Reaves especially. The wild west was a pretty dangerous and scary time. Good read!

Historical USA
I really enjoyed reading about all the things from the past. I always thought of the wild west happening in the 17 & 18 hundreds. I was surprised to realizeThat my ancestors and parents were alive during some of these things

and I love my Dad
Personally, I think Bill O'Reilly is a total a-hole and I would never read his books -- not even under threat of death! However, my Dad digs this guy's books (for whatever reason), and I love my Dad, so... The transaction was perfect, just not a fan of the author.
