Blood Relations: Caribbean Immigrants and the Harlem Community, 1900–1930 (Blacks in the Diaspora)

I wanted this book because I have always been interested in the causal relationship between Caribbean people and the Harlem Renaissance. I have not finished my reading but I was able to find more evidence of individuals and families that became popular and significant during that period. I am from the US Virgin Islands and I liked that people from my island were Identified.

Fascinating history chronicling the ethnic diversity in the village of Harlem. My only critique is that none of the historical figures, other than perhaps Marcus Garvey, were explored in depth. Including 'portraits' of historical figures, whether well known or not, would have added texture to the book and helped to illustrate how the waves of immigration eveolved over time.

I found this book able to connect me to my roots.

Now I understand why Thelonious Monk first love (Ruby) did not work. Her parent were from West Indias, and - this book is about mass migration to Harlem from those Islands and about how mix population of Harlem was then(1920-30's)Very interesting book.I recomend this deeply.J.P.S "Ruby my dear"- beautifull ballad of Monk he left for us - as a ilustration of his feelings.
