The HRM-Dual can do everything anyone needs in a heartbeat
I just received my new Garmin HRM-Dual heart rate monitor chest strap from Amazon today and took it directly to spin class at CYCLEBAR Columbia Pike. I love it! It’s exactly what I needed. It supports dual Bluetooth signals and also ANT+. Now I don’t need a series of Garmin 010 10997 00, Polar H7, and Scosche Rhythm+ straps to combine together to connect to the Concept2 PM5, the iPod Touch, the Garmin 920xt, and even the Keiser M3 and the Schwinn spin bikes at CYCLEBAR. Technically-speaking, the HRM-Dual transmits real-time heart rate data over ANT+ connectivity and dual BLUETOOTH Low Energy (LE) technologyThe new Garmin HRM-Dual heart rate monitor chest strap replaces them all. Don’t pay attention to what DC Rainmaker says about this strap with regards to it being just bundle-fodder, this is the strap I have been waiting for. Yes, maybe the Wahoo TICKR through TICKRX are better value at the low end ($50) and offers more functionality like memory at the high end ($80); however, I will never use the Wahoo app nor will I ever need the memory feature. While the baseline TICKR does offer the same functionality at $20 less, it’s no a Garmin, its battery lasts 1/3 as long, and what’s $20 over the next decade that I’ll probably be using it on all of my machines and devices.Other than that DC Rainmaker did an amazing review both on his site and on YouTube.I also prefer the electrical (ECG) heart rate monitors over optical (PPG) heart rate monitors. While they both work, I have deep veins and so sometimes the optical heart rate monitors are either delayed or they can get lost for a few seconds. While the ICG monitors, such as the HRM-Dual, require moisture to make a solid connection with the pulse and heart rate, I keep a tube of Spectra 360 Electrode Gel next to my Concept2, which seems to work.Yes, it is more expensive than the competition but the battery lasts 3.5 years and it’s Garmin and when you think about it, if it replaces everything, even spin class, the rowing ergometer, the SkiErg, and my watches and bikes, then I’m good to go.I had been using both a Polar H7 around my chest and a Scosche Rhythm+ optical heart rate monitor that I wore on my arm. The Polar H7 supports Bluetooth and the Scosche Rhythm+ supports ANT+.So, I’m pretty psyched about it. It worked perfectly with my watch and my Schwinn Blue Carbon spin bike without a hiccup; however, the signal is pretty strong so my neighbor cyclist recorded my ANT+ signal on her monitor while she was riding as well. I mean, that doesn’t matter much to me—and most riders at CYCLEBAR don’t seem to wear heart rate monitors—so I’ll see how it works out over time.I needed a heart rate monitor that tracked ANT+ and Bluetooth, preferably more than one channel of Bluetooth LE. I am always either on a Bluetooth-enabled device or on an ANT+ device. Often, like at Spin class, I needed both at once and wore two heart rate monitors: first, two chest straps (awful) and then a chest strap and an arm strap. That was OK but the arm strapped required nightly charging and I am not 100% sold on optical heart rate monitors for anything more than my activity tracker. So, when DC Rainmaker reviews the brand new electrical (not optical) heart rate strap that Garmin released, I ordered it right away. It wasn’t even shipping yet. When it arrived, I brought it right to Spin class and it worked. The only down side, maybe, is that the signal for the Garmin HRM-Dual is strong enough that the machines around you might pick up your heart rate. Either the lady next to me at spin class and I were heart-rate synced or her Schwinn was also displaying my HR. But that’s not a bad thing. I assume that if the person next to me had a strap, its closer proximity might override mine. Maybe? One more possible downside is that the strap hooks with the same sort of bra-like hook and loop closure like the Polar H7 has, which can start to become less reliable as the strap gets older and a little more stretched out, instead of a proper clip or the sort of snap-button based attachments that the Wahoo TICKRs have (a nice feature) or the plastic clips, similar to what that old-timey-but-cheap Garmin 010 10997 00 heart rate monitors had.

Does not work as advertised.
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED in GARMIN’s HRM-Dual heart rate monitor. Despite the fact that I have the Garmin Fenix 5S which is supposed to be compatible with the heart rate monitor, the watch app does NOT list the HRM-Dual as an device option (to pair). I switched to a computer (as recommended by the Garmin website - this alone tells me this is an known issue but one that is not disclosed at the point of sale or in marketing) but that just told me to replace the battery. Wait a minute - this is a brand new device and I’m supposed to replace the battery upon opening the package?! Attempted to open the device - used a fine, small Phillips head - the screws will NOT come out. This is so frustrating. Extremely disappointed.

Disappointed
First I’ll say that the quality of the product is great, the band and monitor seem to be high quality. BUT this in no way does what I hoped it would.I own a Garmin Instinct which I love, when I workout I don’t always wear the watch because I need wrist wraps or other equipment, so I hoped this heart rate monitor would be a way to track my HR while allowing me to use wrist wraps. Apparently this device only works in conjunction with the watch, and does not connect to the Garmin Connect app. From what I’ve read it will work with other fitness apps but not Garmin's which makes no sense, I wanted to love this product but honestly am not even sure the purpose of it since it only works when I wear the watch, which already tracks HR, and it doesn’t even work in its own app.

Accurate HRM Strap
Great addition to a Garmin Fore Runner 235. Way more accurate and responsive than any wrist monitor. I compared it to an EKG monitor in cardiac rehab and it tracks perfectly. From my understanding all wrist monitors monitor pulses in the blood flow in the wrist and then calculate the average heart rate where as the chest strap measures the actual heart rate. With a wrist monitor you heart rate reading lags your actual heart rate.

Just works.
Pairs instantly with Garmin Edge 520 (ANT+), Forerunner 630 (ANT+), iPhone 8 (BT), and MacBook Pro (BT). Having both ANT+ and Bluetooth is nice, and makes this a worthwhile update over the previous ANT+-only Soft-strap HRM. (Note, I have had issues with Zwift, but I blame that on Zwift, not the HRM, since also have issues with my power meter). Everything else works as you expect. I sweat like a fiend and I've had no issues with it. The strap is comfortable, and holds the fit adjustment well. I take it in the shower after every use to rinse it off. Once a week I take the pod off and toss the strap in the laundry (in a bra bag, just in case). So far, that seems to be working well. I also like that I can get a replacement strap if/when this one gets gross, and just pop the existing pod onto the new strap.

Can’t get it to pair with devices
I paired this to my I phone, it worked for a day. Now it won’t work. I have not yet been successful at pairing it with my two Garmin Edge computers. Tech support suggested changing the battery (straight out of the box?). I have had 2 previous farming straps (the plain one) that never needed a battery change (over 7 years). I lost each strap. I diverge...I replaced the battery and still can’t pair with anything. Cell phone says it’s connected but don’t see a HR in the health app. Can’t get the Edge to recognize the monitor. Now awaiting further instructions from tech support via e mail. Feel like I have wasted a lot of time and money so far. I will update if I ever get it to work. If it doesn’t work...it’s gettin returned.

Reliable HR monitor
Bought to use with an indoor bike/turbotrainer/Zwift set up, after an older Garmin HR belt gave up. This one is better than the previous version in that the electronics module unclips so the belt can be washed. It also has four contact patches rather than two. In use, I found that wetting the pads with water wasn't sufficient to get a good contact and the signal only became reliable after I started sweating. The easy solution to get accurate recording from the start of the workout was to buy some cheap massage lubricant and use a dab as electrode paste. Instant contact, reliable readings throughout the workout. All good so far!

Good if you need HR data in a slow or stationary position.
Plugin in the Garmin, add some saliva to the probes underneath, set your watch to pair and you're good to go.I had two reasons for going chest HR.My Forerunner 235 doesn't give accurate measures when in a stationary position (ie turbo trainer/zwift or treadmill) or fast walking/power hiking. Using a chest HR measure now gives me accurate measures and smoother data on Garmin. As per the instructions you can put this in the washing machine (it suggests every 7 wears) and survives to tell the tale. If you applications are similar to mine above, it will work for you.

Great HRM to compliment a Garmin Watch
Bought this as the Garmin Watch wrist HRM is not accurate enough for me and the training i am moving into now. This was an instant hit with me - despite some initial delay in getting my watch to find the device to pair up, but after licking the sensor pads and reapplying the HRM it detected it in about 30 seconds. I have used it on my last 6 runs and it fits great, stays in place and is not uncomfortable at all even on a 90 minute run. Can't comment on battery life but so far its a top buy for the price
