Los senores del narco (Spanish Edition) Paperback – March 15, 2011

600 pages on the catastrophe in Mexico. I decided to read it in Spanish to get the flavor. Horrifying story--I don't know whether the translation captures it. Basically, she argues that the war on drugs in the US and Mexico is a fraud, and that the real start of the cartels' power goes back to Iran-Contra and the Reagan administration's use of drug money (facilitated by our friends in the CIA) to fund the contras opened the door first to Colombia. When the US decided that Colombia had become a failed state and the Colombians decided they wanted their country back, the bulk of the operations shifted to Mexico, whose proximity to the American market made it a fine distribution platform. What's really disturbing is not just the way that the huge profits to be made slowly corrupted the upper echelons of the Mexican political elite (the Brothers Salinas, one armed with his Harvard degree), but that eventually the balance of power turned, and that the collapse of the PRI produced a sort of narogobierno with the PAN willingly become the employees of the drug lords--rather than viceversa. There had always been upper level corruption, but I had the impression that people like Gamboa Patron or Camacho were running the show. By the time Mourino's plane was blown up over the Reforma (unbelievable), the narcos were running the politicians. Even more disturbing is Hernandez' claim that that Felipe Calderon's government was protecting The Pacific cartel in its war against the Golf cartel and the Zetas--which makes an unfortunate amount of sense when you look at the pattern of events. She correctly predicts that Chapo Guzman would have a staged retirement--so, now, I wonder, who's running the show and what EPN is doing in all of this.It's tough going. The book is poorly edited and could use a cast of characters (maybe there is one in the English edition). There's too much trivial detail which, if you're smart, you will just skip over. From my perspective, I'd like to know how much of this stuff has really spilled over into Texas, whose surprisingly resilient economic performance during hard times must have something to do with the flood of laundered money making its way into "legitimate businesses" here. Someone with as much courage as Ms Hernandez is going to have to do that story, but I won't hold my breath.

Me gustó el libro por la cantidad y calidad de la información. A veces los libros del narco pasan demasiado tiempo hablando de una grandísima cantidad de mafiosos y oficiales corruptos a bajísimo nivel del hampa, cuando el título del libro implica que la investigación se va a tratar de "la pesada" del hampa.Creo que la autora logró escribir bastante de El Chapo y otros grandes del hampa para evitar este error. Generalmente, el libro era muy interesante.Áreas para Mejoramiento.Yo quisiera que la autora se hubiera enfocado todavía más en los líderes del hampa. Reconozco que esto es una preferencia mía y que tal vez a otros les interesan más las anécdotas de sicarios o policías corruptos de bajo nivel. Después de todo, están más cerca a la acción que los capos, que mueven las piezas desde lejos. Pero a mí me hubiera gustado aprender más de cómo los hombres como El Chapo lograron ascender la jerarquía de poder en ese mundo tan traídor y difícil en que los mafiosos se mueven.Parece que la autora habla de lo siguiente respecto a El Chapo: 1) un poco sobre su niñez y el involucramiento de su papá en cultivar y vender marihuana, cosa que obviamente influyó a El Chapo; 2) la traición de El Chapo por los Arellano, tratando de matarlo; 3) el arresto de El Chapo en Guatemala; 4) el dominio de El Chapo en la prisión sobre los custodios y también de su cartel; 5) la fuga de El Chapo; 6) el dominio de El Chapo al escaparse.Donde faltó más información fue entre (1) y (2) y entre (3) y (4). Respecto a (1) y (2), ¿cómo era que El Chapo se creció en el negocio, y por qué los Arellano decidieron traicionarlo? Respecto a (3) y (4), ¿cómo logró crecerse tanto en la prisión cuando tenía enemigos tan poderosos como los Arellano? ¿Por qué no acabaron con él en la prisión?

Even if you are remotely thinking about reading this book,,,,,do it. Very well written. It covers so much. More than just some of the top narcos in Mexico. It does throw you into deep water right off the bat, but then it gives you this intensive background of all the major players and the history of drug dealing in Mexico. The book will take you to central america and then south america. It will even cover our own government. Anabel Hernandez is a incredible woman. Very gutsy. I definitely like her take on all these characters. It's inspiring to know that there are people like her in Mexico. I loved her reason for writing the book. Hopefully one day people in Mexico realize that they are that nation,,,not the narcos, not the corrupt police, not the corrupt politicians.

This is a really good book if you're looking into an overview of how the most powerful drug lords came to fruition. It also gives you a great insight into what happens under the table between criminals and the governments of the United States and Mexico in order to advance their secret agendas. The only gripe about this book is that the author makes it somewhat confusing by sometimes referring to the same character by just his last name, or first and one last name, or their nickname. I could see how this could be even more confusing if the reader is not familiar with the characters or with Spanish names. Overall, this is a great book.

Anabel Hernandez nuevamente a cruzado la linea de los negocios mas oscuros y sucios que hasta la fecha se dan entre el Gobierno de Mexico y los Carteles de la droga, brindandonos informacion de primera fuente de como altos funcionarios del Gobierno Mexicano han estado bajo el yugo y servicio de la C.I.A. para poder tener el control y transito de la droga hacia Estados Unidos (mayor consumidor de drogas en el mundo). Este libro ademas aclara el fenomeno de las guerras fallidas contra las drogas. Es un excelente libro que el lector debe de tomar en muy alta consideracion si en realidad desea conocer sobre el fenomeno del Narcotrafico en Mexico y Estados Unidos.

Este libro es una investigacion profunda acerca de los lazos entre los narcotraficantes mas importantes del pais, y dibuja una linea de la historia mas o menos clara en el complejo fenomeno. Lo compre porque quiero enterarme mas y entender que es lo que demonios pasa con mi pais y esto te da una muy buena idea, es un trabajo periodistico remarcable, altamente recomendado por mi.

Un libro que te abre los ojos y muestra la parte oculta del mundo de las drogas y de la realidad mexicana.
