The Perfect Reference
This book is an excellent reference guide. The table of contents is divided into twenty chapters with corresponding sections for each chapter. I suppose the book can be read from front to back; however, I find it most helpful for quick reference needs. If you use Adobe's Creative Cloud, you have access to a variety of video tutorials. The book allows me to quickly address my questions/reference needs. When I opt to view Adobe's tutorials, the book serves as a nice complement. The color illustrations and tips are also helpful.

Great overview for complete beginners
I have several years of experience with Adobe Illustrator, so the majority of the content wasn't super-beneficial to me. A lot of the book is written within the framework of how you're using Adobe Illustrator within the workplace, so sections on preparing files talk about how you might want to format it in case you're handing it off to an animator, or a print shop. On that note, there was a chapter on how to generate and prepare SVGs that I thought was really interesting. It goes beyond exporting to that file format, and into how to better optimize them and use SVG filters.Another nice thing is that the layout of the book is really clean. My problem with some Adobe how-to books is that screenshots show too much of their virtual workspace, making the text in them unreadable. Here, it is just the vector image you're making, a small window, a cursor, and anchor points.Going back to what I said earlier, the thing about this book is that it gives you an overview of the major tools in Illustrator, but there's a downside: there aren't any files that you can use to edit along with the book. For some sections, steps are listed for how to generate the exact image from scratch, but it's not the case for all of them. I could find some of the files on the author's website and available in an editable format, but not all. I'm the kind of person who likes to tinker with things when learning something new, so not having a lot of editable files is kind of a bummer.

Thorough and Concise
If God had had access to the Adobe Illustrator Creative Cloud Illustrator I am certain he could have created a much better version of the world in less time, that is to say after spend several months trying to figure out what all the tools do and where they are when you need them. If you’re like me I only ever learn about any creative function when I need it, meanwhile I’ll look longing at that grid tool and think someday I will figure you out.So what excites me about Adobe Illustrator CC For Dummies is that I can start reading it and quickly familiarize myself with tools I have never had to use before, I’ve also learn some tricks I didn’t know about tools I use all the time. Though, I did start at the front with the intention of learning everything in stages, by the fifth chapter I decided to skip right to Scalable Vectors.David Karlins is a very engaging instructor; I feel he adds just enough light humor to keep it interesting but not get in the way of instructing. His instructions follow a very sensible order and I feel he leaves no detail out, he even covers more obscure tools like the grid tool, which by the way is a lot of fun.

Great for quick reintroduction
I took several years off from Graphic Design when I had kids and when I tried to get back into the game, the playing field had changed way more than I thought it had. This book has helped me get back up to snuff and to understand why things that used to make sense to do in InDesign (area type) can be helpful in Illustrator now (Twitter cards … also, the knowledge that Twitter cards are a thing.) The entire section on SVG is helpful since this filetype wasn’t something I ever saw in print design. Written in a tone that is explanatory and engaging, this book is targeted at what you need to know instead of a bunch of excess to wade through.

Great for illustrator beginners
Great for illustrator beginners in this book. I prefer books in real life, especially when I easily want to go and detail instructions and step by step slowly over specific projects in illustrator. Written concise and easy to understand, yet gives an overview to help a beginner to see the bigger picture of the program.

Very informative and a good support book for beginners upwards
Depends what you are looking at from a book - if you are looking to learn then this will be a very slow way to do so reading about each functionality (although the descriptions are fantastic). If you are proficient in using illustrator and just need to look a few things up and see hints and tips this is the book for you!

Not recommended
I've had this book for several weeks and decided to give a negative review because I expected a better Dummy book. Wanted a book for reference but this book lacks details and substance. Book didn't offer much details on keyboard shortcuts; the suggested download hotkey file is not comprehensive; difficult to navigate. Learning basic pen tool using this book is frustrating, not explained very well. If you want to learn the program, skip this book. Not worth buying!
