Your Body in Balance: The New Science of Food, Hormones, and Health

Very informative, well written. Provides info your doctor can't (or doesn't have time to) give you.
One of my favorite authors! In this book he goes into detail about how what we eat affects our health, in more ways than you'd expect. He covers some health conditions, nutrients/nutrition, and has plenty of examples of people who have improved their health through a healthy diet. Eating healthfully does not have to be expensive. Just consider how much money you will save when you stop buying meat and dairy products. I'm definitely looking for a more economical way of eating as well as it being much healthier. This book is very interesting to read and gives you a good amount of information as a background for your healthful journey. I would like to drop off a copy of Dr. Barnard's books for my doctor and nutritionist!

Good Read
For learning about Hormones and your body, this is an excellent book. I loved it. If you are in your early 40's it a must read, if you are older, you might understand some things better, but certainly if you are pre menopausal, this is a great book to help you understand the technical part of your system. Kudos to the author.

A Great Resource!
I have been a fan of Dr. Barnard’s books, because they are a good balance between simple scientific explanations and practical steps you can put to use. But Your Body in Balance hits a whole new level, and I think it is his best yet. Each chapter starts with vignettes of people who’ve dealt with health problems and describes what they did. Then, it shows how foods work in your body to correct the condition, followed by specific steps for putting it into practice. Dr. Barnard also describes the scientific research that led to these advances in just the right amount of detail. And if you want more info, he lists the scientific references. The book is very encouraging, showing you how to change your diet to conquer health problems. But I have to say, I found myself getting angry that this information has not been out there before. On practically every page, I was thinking about how many friends had menstrual symptoms when they were young, hot flashes when they were older, weight problems, mood problems, a goofed up thyroid, and everything else, and no one ever figured out how to help them; I think this book will mark a turning point. That said, Dr. Barnard does not really criticize the medical community and makes a point that medical care has important roles to play. But I honestly think that if doctors provided good nutrition advice, there would be much less need for medications, etc. Anyway, I think this is a great resource, and I wish it had been available years ago.

Full of good information
Well written, easy to read, the science is there but in easy to understand language, I've followed Dr Barnard for a few years so a lot of information was not new to me, but the recipes were a nice addition and the information about chemicals was useful. Would recommend to anyone with the desire to make some changes to improve their health and life.

Good information on how to improve your health
Who knew? This book provides a completely new take on nutrition, focusing on how foods affect hormones. It is easy to read, but backs up its information with scientific evidence, which I found reassuring. The book starts with conditions related to sex hormones: infertility, menstrual cramps, endometriosis, PCOS, hot flashes, breast cancer, and prostate cancer. This may be the most surprising part of the book, because it shows how to choose foods to get hormones under control and shows why those foods work. I had never heard of any of this before, but Dr. Barnard lays it out clearly. Then, it goes into ED, acne, diabetes, thyroid problems, depression, and anxiety, and shows how foods affect these due to hormonal changes. Again, the explanations are clear. Some of the diabetes information will be familiar to people who have seen Dr. Barnard’s PBS program or read his diabetes book, but the rest is completely new, so far as I can tell. The final part shows how to plan your meals, and has a very nice extra chapter on environmental chemicals—where they are and how to avoid them. The recipes are numerous and look great.I can think of so many people who have suffered with these conditions and would have benefited from this information, and I’m glad it’s finally out there.

Not really what I expected but…
The media could not be loaded. I was expecting something a bit different I was thinking about returning it , however, it contains a lot of vegan recipes so I decided to keep it I bought it on sale for $10 wouldn’t spend more of it

Explains the science behind making food choices
When I first went vegan it was pre-social media, so you really did have to read-up on the literature or rely on vetted sources like going to see someone talk in person at university. Nowadays there are so many sources and it's so hard to trust what you randomly find online, especially around scientific outcomes for studies and how that relates to choices you make in everyday life. Still always good to see solid literature (although in digital, not paper form this time; technology!)The book does a good job of making the science clear without being so simple that it's not convincing or helpful. There are some charts and whatnot, but the narratives help a lot for someone like me who is not a chemist, dietician, or nutritionist. Basically, I appreciate the straight forward stuff like "What about olive oil?" or salt, or soy, or what have you. The book addresses commonly held beliefs, whether they are accurate or not, and does well to show you why they are myths or just solidly held, accurate beliefs. As well as the evergreen questions like, should I really buy all organic, what about exercise, and all the other issues than I hear discussed almost daily weekly over the past 20 years of being vegan. The path to health is never a straight line; you have to continue to learn and adjust as time goes on. Glad folks are still helping us do that.

Recomendable 100%.
