Math, Symbol, and Culture

In his bashing of the dominant modern-"scientific" paradigm, I love Clifford Geertz' work. But in the concept of "thick description," or the work itself, I find myself always wishing for more.It's like Geertz goes halfway - "I don't like you, rationalist-paradigm, but I still live in the Ivory Tower, so I must somehow justify my work here."Obviously a very experienced and intelligent man, Geertz fails to transmit anything compelling about the cultures he studies.I wish he were Nietzsche...Geertz needs more poetry, and more fire, and even less concern than he already has for the establishment or what anyone who reads his work thinks about it.
