The wood of ironwood is very similar to that of ebony; It is very hard and resistant, unlike most of the wood that floats, it sinks in the water. Hence its name of ironwood (Palo Fierro). It is one of the most important ecological and economic species in the Sonoran desert. Its main product is wood, which for its remarkable hardness use some indigenous communities in northern Mexico for the manufacture of handicrafts (ironwood carvings).
