Yes, the reviews and consumer photos for model pp1k are very misleading. The model is not electronic or biometric in any way. I was misled and therefore surprised when I opened the box and found a simple key-locking mechanism, but that's the model and that's what I bought.

Q: Is this safe fire resistant, and if so how long would it resist a fire?

most inexpensive safes (under $1,000) fire resistance is from putting wet materials in between the safe's walls. this makes them lousy place to keep metal objects (like guns) or loaded mags

Q: How much clearance, above it's height, is needed in a nightstand drawer for this to open to make a gun easily accessible?

From the bottom of the unit to the tip of the fully opened lid is 9.75 inches. Remember, the lid is controlled by a gas operated strut, which only goes from closed to fully open. I you deactivate the strut, which I wouldn't advise, you can easily remove the weapon from an open space of 3.5 inches above the height of the safe. I hope this helps.

Q: Is there a locking cable for this unit? Where do you get the locking cable?

The safe did not come with a locking cable. It only came with 2 bolts to bolt it down if you desired to do so. You would have to buy the locking cable separate.
