This item looks really cool even without a menu card or book resting on it...but with such a book in place it is held steady and at the perfect angle for looking down on. It's black so it goes with any other colour in the kitchen/table and is sturdy to hold most average books in place perfectly. As stated when you put your book/menu card away it still looks good either empty or as I do put the morning post in it for other members of the family.
