The Illustrator: 100 Best from Around the World

Way beyond my expectations
I thought this would be a nice little coffee table book with photos and maybe some captions. The cover looks a little underwhelming and so I thought it would be a marginal text at best. Boy was I wrong. It's hardcover and the binding is solid. This is a full-on encyclopedia. There are 661 pages!!! A satin bookmark is sewn in the binding so that there is no need to dog-ear pages. The descriptions and illustrator bios are lovely. The pictures are of varying sizes. Some of the illustrations are a two-page spread that bleeds over the gutter so there is no interruption of the image. There is a wonderful balanced diverse selection of illustrators. It really is an international representation of illustrators. The final pages of the book give several addition Kadir Nelson pics. I love this book.

Disappointing - does not live up to “around the world” title
I saw the great reviews for this book but to me it does not live up to it’s description as the top 100 illustrators from around the world. It is very white US centric with sprinklings of Northern Europeans as you would imagine from a German house. This seems old fashioned and out of touch and does not cover South America, Africa, Asia, Australasia. There must be amazing creatives unseen. In this book There are two black artists. Only One based in Africa. One Asian artist based in Japan. This Is just not interesting and shame on Taschen’s editors producing such a one dimensional book. Seems out of touch.

If you are illustrator => you must have it !
If you are painter / illustrator or designer you might pick up out of this book a loaf of inspirations ! I love it and it took a place in my design-book-collection! Great quality of book and it's design. I am fan of TASCHEN production. They always make something delightful 😊

Revelador
