Do not use as a hammer.
Worked great as a hatchet, flipped it over to use it as a hammer and the head split in half.

junk
Ended up in 3 pieces after the first use. The rear striker chipped off after 4 or 5 strikes. Then the blade stuck into the wood minus the handle 2 minutes after that. It's all in the garbage now.

Pot metal!
I’ve had this hatchet for about 2 and a half years. In that time I’ve only used it 3 or 4 times. I went out to use it the other day as a wedge to split some bigger logs and the blunt end broke off after about 50 strikes with a hammer. It revealed some very pourous looking pot metal. The sharp edge is still usable but who knows when that will break too. I don’t recommend this hatchet!

Incredible value
The picture makes it look much bigger than it actually is. It's just about exactly 1 foot long, with a 5 1/2 inch long head. The handle is a very strong type of plastic material, and it looks great. The rubber grip gives excellent grip and it very comfortable to hold at the same time. The head is thick, but not too thick and has a nice flat grind on the edge. It comes slightly sharpened, but can be made to have an absolute razor edge, which holds excellently. Even though the blade is stainless steel, it is very strong, and it also has a cool dark grey coating, which stays on well. Due to its decreased size, it does not get in the way anywhere you have it stored. It is rather light compared to most hatchets, but still packs an icredible hit. The kydex sheathe is very durable, and will not rot like leather. It fits the head perfectly and snaps on and off. The snap is a bit hard to open and close at first, but with time gets easier. Lastly, the fire steel. The ferro rod is hidden in the base of the handle, completely out of the way. The rod on it's own is worth atleast $20. This thing is enormous. It is 2 3/4 inches long, and 3/8 inches thick. It is much larger than a usual firestarter rod. The top of the head (NOT THE EDGE) works great to spark it, and it sends off a LOT of sparks. The absolutely only bad thing I've found is that the lanyard that comes on the ferro rod is very cheap, but that can easily be fixed with a nice paracord lanyard. Overall, this is a wonderful investment for a small camping/hiking hatchet.

Quality hatchet, comfortable handle - Very pleased with my purchase!
I've watched videos, read reviews...pretty much "reviewed" out on selecting a hatchet. I settled on the Schrade SCAXE2 and I am highly pleased. If you want the manufacturer specs, the seller has those posted. As far as the actual specs, here you go. The "usable" handle length is about 9.5". Yes, the handle is longer but, I am referring to the usable portion. The curved blade is 3.75" (straight line measurement from tip to tip). The hammer head is 1.5" x 0.75". The overall "usable" specs make it a decent size to hang from a belt, vest, backpack, etc. It is not bulky or overly heavy (it is a hatchet after all) and after using it to chop up some 2-2.5" branches that had fallen in the yard, I didn't feel like I was swinging a bowling ball around at all. The handle has finger placements built in and is rubber which equals comfort. It also softens a mis-swing a little. Call it recoil padding. :) The rubber handle also prevents slipping. The blade is sharp and nitrite coated. After a few uses, really not a scratch on it other than the blade edge. Clean and oil and I am sure the blade/head will last for many, many years to come. I didn't order it for the fire starter but, it's an added bonus for sure. Mine fits quite snug in the handle of the hatchet and took a little effort to pull out. After using the hatchet, it did not loosen up a bit. Personally, my theory is, leave the fire starter there...unless you need it. No need to pull it out...stuff back in, over and over. The cover/carrying case is definitely a neat concept, although I have to wonder how long it will last. It covers the head perfectly and easily fits on a belt but, it does seem to be a little on the lightweight side. Only time will tell...for now, it works fine and I like the design of it. I've read reviews of cold weather handle breaks, etc. I live in the south. Not a lot of cold weather here...so, should be fine. In the light to medium use that I put it through, the handle seemed to be just fine. This is a solid, comfortable small size hatchet that is perfect for general use, backpacking, camping, or even survival situations. Very pleased with the quality for the price!

Makes you want to swing it
Got it for one of my bridesmaids (since she's not the girly type). When she opened it, she had the biggest smile then started swinging it around. We were all laughing and wondering why she would randomly do that from time to time until I held it myself. This thing- must have a spell cast on it that just makes you want to swing it around. It's balanced forward, so that when you hold it, it just feels good to start chopping at stuff. Oh, it's nice. Plus the extra goodies in the handle- the flint or whatever in there sparks super bright. She'll be hacking down trees and lighting them on fire in no time!

great hatchet.
This is a very simple looking but effective hatchet. It features a hard-plastic protective cover for the head of the hatchet as well as a belt hold on the cover. The butt of the hatchet holds a large ferro rod for starting fire. The backside of the axe head has a nice hammer grooving as well as a lanyard hole. Very sturdy tool. I like the simple style and the ferro rod in the handle. This seems to be a great hatchet for camping or hiking.

I purchased this hatchet last week and I'm pleased with it so far
I purchased this hatchet last week and I'm pleased with it so far. It arrived not very sharpe, luckily I also purchased the Lansky sharpening puck. After about half an hour with the puck, the hatchet was sharp enough to cut paper. I recommend everyone buying this hatchet to also get the sharpening puck, you won't regret it. The sheath could be better but as long the hatchet is inside my pack and the blade is secured, I'm ok with the sheath. A huge bonus is the ferro rod that comes with the hatchet. It's a very good rod but don't waste you time trying to strike it with the hatchet. Just use the back of your knife and it works great. Pairing this hatchet with Schrade SCHF52 knife (like I did) and you're all set for processing wood.

Ok axe
This is an ok axe. It is very light and portable, good for a BOB or backpacking bag.Blade- The steel it is made from isnt very tough and nicks and folds easy from basic wood splitting. (Titanium Coated 3Cr13 Stainless) FYI i didnt hit a rock lol, 3Cr13 stainless is not meant for an axe, its great on small pocket knives though!Handle- Also the rubber handle seems so be coming loose. The fire steel fits in there pretty snug and i dont think it will come out front using a lanyard.Sheath- The sheath is ok, I could see the sheath cracking due to it being a hard plastic. Could use a better belt loop and more mounting options. Its an ok axe but i would get a carbon steel axe or large knife for any serious use ie backpacking/BOB. Last thing you want in those situations is a busted axe.
