Incredible beginner box, great value!
This box rules. It might be the best "start collecting" box of any 40k army.First of all, let's talk contents. The box contains 10 Rubric Marines, 10 Tzaangors, a Tzaangor Upgrade Pack sprue, and the named character, Ahzek Ahriman. Altogether this retails for about $155 if bought separately on GW's website, so it's a sick value. In terms of assembly, these models aren't the brand-new push-fit models, and require glue. They're still fairly recent, and are pretty easy to put together. The Rubric arms holding the bolters can be a little annoying, but they're good practice if you plan to play any kind of Chaos or Imperial Space Marine army. Otherwise, it was pretty breezy. Plus the sculpts all look great.Paint-wise, Tzaangors are super easy, and they can be as reductive or as complicated as you like, which makes them an excellent started model. The Rubrics aren't that hard to paint, but have lots of little details with all that gold filigree, which makes them excellent for practicing your brushwork, and still not super tough. Finally, Ahriman is the big show. He's a wonderfully detailed model and can be challenging to paint, but didn't give me specific frustration around any one aspect or detail. If you're new to the hobby, I'd recommend painting him last so you get some practice in first, but don't be intimidated. On the tabletop, this is an excellent starter set. The power level/points in this box more or less add up to exactly enough to play a small-scale game right off the bat. It has some front-line meatgrinder troops, some tough, shooty infantry, and a powerful psyker HQ to support the team by buffing your dudes and blasting your enemies with invisible mind bullets. Also, FYI...if you have an Exalted Sorcerers box, you can use leftover parts from those models to convert one of your Rubrics to a second Aspiring Sorcerer, allowing you to build two small teams of Rubrics instead of one, which is a nice option for small-scale (~500 points) games.Awesome deal overall. I strongly recommend this product!
