From Russian Agent to Daredevil Sidekick
This is an early history of the Black Widow from her early appearances in Iron Man and then The Avengers right through to her solo series I’m Amazing Adventures. Some of he story is told in excerpts from these comics and some are full stories but they clearly catalogue her development as a character. The solo stories have some great Gene Colan and Bill Everett artwork and there are some nice examples of the sexier versions of this art before they were toned down for publication. All in all, a very enjoyable collection, though it is a real shame the solo series did not last longer!

A Bit Patchwork, But a Worthy Attempt
The Black Widow movie coming out in a few months means that Natasha gets her own couple of Epic Collections this year (similar to the two Ms. Marvel Epics we got last year to tie in with the Captain Marvel movie). However, without a lengthy solo run for the character to start from, they've had to take a slightly different approach this time. The volume starts by collecting her first appearances as an Iron Man villain in Tales of Suspense, which are short and focused enough to all be presented in their entirety. Then all her guest appearances in Avengers are included, although for these only a few whole issues are given; most of them only collect the pages relevant to her subplots. This does leave this section feeling slightly bitty, and you also get snippets of Avengers plotlines that you never see the beginning or conclusion to. Still, they manage to capture the Widow's character arc as she transitions to a hero, as well as her relationship with Hawkeye and revelations about her husband. After this you get an issue of Spider-Man, important because that's where Natasha gets her 'modern' costume as well as her trademark red hair. This segues into the only section of the volume that will be unique to the Widow volumes (everything else is collected, or in the case of the Spidey issue will be collected, in their own series' Epics) - the first Black Widow solo strip, which took up half of the Amazing Adventures comic for eight issues. While short-lived, these do finally focus solely on BW, allowing for more character development. The volume finishes up with an issue of Daredevil, which in some ways closes out her Amazing Adventures arc and heralds the next phase of the character's life - she would go on to team up with the Man Without Fear for a lengthy run, some of which has already been collected in the DD Epics. So all in all, a bit of a patchwork book, with only about 80 pages of material that's not available in other Epic Collections, so if you're getting any of those as well, particularly the Avengers ones, you may not feel this particular volume is worth it. However, they do an admirable job at collating all her guest appearances from the sixties into what feels like a semi-coherent character arc, so makes for a grand introduction for people who are only interested in her in particular. As well, you get plenty of great work from the big Silver Age names - Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, Don Heck, John Buscema, John Romita and Gene Colan, so it is at least a very handsome book.Extras include ten pages of original art and a house ad from the time, helping to make the package feel as complete as possible. The second Black Widow Epic, due in a few months, sounds like it will have a much higher proportion of exclusive material, but for now this acts as a satisfying primer for those coming to the character fresh.

Great Introduction to Black Widow
I was looking for some background material to learn about the Black Widow before the movie came out this summer. This collection did not disappoint at all! I usually read newer comics and it was awesome to see the format and flow of the old comics. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to know more about the earlier history of Black Widow.
