Beautifully written and well plotted police procedurals
The Lewis novels are beautifully written and well plotted police procedurals from another time, the seventies, without smart phones, DNA, and all the other high tech gadgets. The characters are certainly individualistic, both bad and good, and are very realistic in their actions and motivations. Inspector Crow is, frankly, a very different type of protagonist; his unusual physical characteristics hide a sharp intelligence and a kind heart (for the victims). I am currently reading my way through the series and enjoying every moment. What is most enjoyable is the beauty of the language used in describing characters and settings. Most are beautiful and some downright ugly, but the language is vivid and gripping. These novels are really a bargain for the price!

Classic Slow Burning Mystery Writer
Don't be fooled by the Amazon 'Full of twists' click bait - it does have twists, but Roy Lewis is a great old-fashioned writer with more going than a quick thrill. His novels are generally slow burning, but of an era (not long ago) where every murder mystery didn't need a sex scene, a boat chase and a cyber-techno quirk. Oh, and thankfully not a 'defies all boundaries of physics serial killer'. I REALLY enjoy Lewis and this is more of his quality writing.

Good read
4 starsCharlie Rutland works as a journalist for a tabloid called Scathe. It is a newspaper that walks a fine line between true journalism and a libelous scandal sheet. Charlie’s boss is a man who thinks himself much smarter and craftier than he really is.When Charlie’s body is found beaten to death in his rented bungalow, DCI Crow and his partner DI Wilson are assigned the case. Crow and Wilson soon learn that Rutland was not a likeable fellow and many had reason to wish him harm.A stolen car, a German industrialist, a woman’s jealous partner and a shady boss as well as others all play a part in the story that follows. The identity of the murderer came as a surprise to me. It was not who I thought it was – at all. I had to chuckle at the brilliance of the twist in the plot. This book is set in the 1960’s before the forensic advantages that we have today. The police had to rely on interviews, shoe leather and fingerprints. It makes for a very different experience than the detective stories set in the present. It is refreshing in a way. It is very well written and plotted and it flows nicely. It is a good and interesting story. While the reader strongly suspects that they know who the killer is following the police investigation is fascinating and intriguing. DCI Crow is savvy and very easy to underestimate. His casual questions are often taken at face value and their importance is overlooked. This is my second book by Roy Lewis and I liked this one better than the other book that I read. I’m very glad that I gave him another chance.I want to thank NetGalley and Joffe Books for forwarding to me a copy of this very good book for me to read, enjoy and review.

A fine police procedural
Murder for Money was a wonderful surprise. It is a fast-paced but methodical police procedural that takes place in the late 1960s. After a muck-racking journalist is found brutally murdered, Detective Inspector Crow is faced with the daunting task of ferreting out the killer. With many suspects to choose from, it won’t be an easy task.Detective Crow is a sensible, intelligent police officer and has a fine staff as well. The plot, the characters and the mystery itself are excellent and the twists in the investigation will keep readers engaged. Even though I have not read the previous books in this series, I didn’t find this to be a disadvantage. I thoroughly enjoyed Murder for Money and plan to read more by this author. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.

The original title was much more appropriate...read this book and see why.
It feels strange to be the first reviewer who has actually paid for their book. ! I mention this again because a lot of potential new readers are rightly suspicious of so many good reviews from " freebies ". Fear not ,this is one of Lewis's best novels. It reaches some dark corners and I found the ending to be both a surprise and quite moving .Inspector Crow ..not that likeable in some ways..certainly stands up for his principles. The lack of modern forensic stuff and mobiles etc etc isn't noticeable . Why do publishers put out these silly statements ...will they next say that"Baskerville Hall " can't be used because it doesn't have internet !!??. Please credit readers with a sense of history and perspective. Grouse over ,this is a top value reissue.

Good
I really enjoyed this crime story, set in the late sixty's, no mobile phone's no DNA just old fashion police work. I like Inspector Crow, not with out his faults but a very interesting character. The ending was a complete surprise and well worked out. this is the second Inspector Crow I have read and will look forward to reading him again.

Enthralling
Another compelling murder mystery featuring the enigmatic DCI John Crow. Set mostly in Yorkshire, this crime thriller keeps the reader guessing throughout, with a totally unexpected conclusion. An exciting read.
